According to the online history of St. Mary's Cathedral, during the period from 1747 to 1758, Mass was celebrated "in a room in Fort Frontenac".  After 1758, it was held in a private dwelling, then in the Anglican Church of St. George until the first Catholic parish church of St. Joseph's was established in 1808 in Kingston "...at the corner of what is now known as Bagot and William Streets..." By 1826, the Diocese of Kingston was formed to encompass the area west of the Ottawa River, and presently includes the area bounded by Carleton Place in the North, Picton to the South, Marmora to the West and Morrisburg to the East.

History of the First Cathedrals in Montréal !!!  In 1821, the Notre-Dame de Montréal, became the first Cathedral in Montreal, however, it held this title for only a few days.  Due to the priests of Saint-Sulpice, asserting historical rights on the island of Montreal, the bishop relocated.  Mgr. Lartigue, however, accepted the invitation of the Hospitalières de Saint-Joseph, and thus the chapelle de l'Hôtel-Dieu, located at the angle of the streets Saint-Paul and Saint-Joseph (which became Saint-Sulpice Street), was second cathedral during three years.  In 1822, a site for a new Cathedral was chosen.  The site was in the Saint-Louis suburb, at the corner of the street Saint-Denis, between Sainte-Catherine and Nice (today Maisonneuve) streets. September 18, 1825, Mgr Lartigue blessed the third church and celebrated the Mass there. A few days later, on September 22, the church was dedicated as Saint-Jacques le Majeur.   Saint-Jacques le Majeur officially became the Cathedral on March 13, 1836, when Montreal was named a Diocese.
On July 9, 1852, a disastrous fire in Montreal destroyed the cathedral and evêché, whose construction was not completed yet.  Mgr. Le Bourget had to be relocated to l'Hospice Saint-Joseph, a refuge founded by Sisters of Providence (Sœurs de la Providence) for the poor or sick priests. The  Chapel de l'Asile de la Providence thus became, temporarily, fourth cathedral of Montreal.
In 1870, building began for the new Cathedral of Notre Dame was to be built on René-Lévesque Boulevard, however, due to many difficulties, the church was not finished for many years.  In spite of a great age and a precarious health, Mgr. Le Bourget visited some 150 parishes. Five days after its death, June 8, 1885, its mortal remains was deposited in a vault of the unfinished Cathedral. Mgr. Fabre inaugurated the Cathedral the Easter Day, that is to say on March 25, 1894, 42 years after the fire of the old Cathedral.  The Cathedral Saint-Jacques le Majeur included the territory of the parishes of Notre-Dame and Saint-Joseph.  In 1919, Pope Benoit XV, at the request of Mgr. Bruchési, conferred the title of minor Basilica on the Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Cathedral.  Following significant renovations, during the era from 1955 to 1960, the pope conferred upon the Cathedral the title of  Basilica, and it was given the name Marie-Reine-du-Monde .

   In 1912, "...the population, almost exclusively Catholic, varies from 4000 in winter to 8000 in summer, owing to the presence of the fishing crews. They are all Bretons, Normans, and Basques.  Besides the six resident missionary priests, the fishermen, on the great banks are visited every month by a chaplain on board a hospital ship which also distributes their mail.
