holds up the child, who in turn holds up "the
pearl of a great price"--a sign
of faith. Underneath
the child are richly decorated books, suggesting
that he and his gift of faith are of greater importance
than institutional
knowledge. To the right
of the Christ child is the inscription "Be Not
