| CAUTIONARY NOTE: I am a reluctant genealogist at best. I have
no particular
interest in begats and begots. However, I do like a good story, and I enjoy doing research and massaging databases. I've been an avid buff of history, politics, and archeology as long as I can remember. |
| Perhaps that's why both my Aunt Blanche and my mother Rosamond elected to hand down their accumulations of family records to me just before they passed on a couple of years ago, within months of each other. |
| It's my impression that most people dig into their family's
pasts for all the wrong reasons, looking for heroes, great men, or even
worse, blue blood and a coat of arms. In fact, most aristocratic families
have more than their fair share of scoundrels, idiots and odd fellows.
In the middle ages, you didn't become great, rich, or powerful by being an angel. So perched at the root of the tree is quite likely a bloody thug or rapacious scoundrel. My family tree appears to be no exception. Thank goodness; the villains and oddballs make for much better reading! |
