Making Splits

One of the springtime tasks for a beekeeper is the making of splits to increase his colonies of bees. Normally, a beekeeper will lose about 10% of his hives during the winter months for one reason or another. One way to restore his colonies to his desired level is by making splits. Here I'm taking about four frames of bees and brood from one or more of my stronger hives and placing Making Splitsthem in an empty hive. I make sure I do not take the queen out of the strong hive, but I will put in a new queen cell in the new colony that I just made. In a week or so, the new queen will hatch, make her mating flight and return to the new hive and start doing her job of laying worker bees to increase the population of the colony. Shortly after that, I will place some honey supers on the new hive so the bees will be able to store surplus honey that I can later remove, extract and offer for sale. I'm a partner with another beekeeper in a queen raising operation. We raise our own queens for our own use and also sell some to friends and acquaintances throughout Alabama and Tennessee. Our queen raising activity and split making usually takes place in March through July. In July, the weather here is just too hot to continue to raise queens and the bees do not do well in this activity during hot weather.
