FOTD -- May 21, 2009   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today we take a journey into one of those oversized Mandelbrot sets generated by the NewDivideBrot formula, which are Mandelbrot only on the surface.   In its depths, today's M-set develops distinctly Z^(77)+C characteristics.

In the image we delve into the Seahorse Valley area of the parent M-set.   Near the limit of resolution we find a scene that by all rights should have a quadratic minibrot at its center.   All the quadratic trimmings are there, but at the center we actually have a Z^(77)+C minibrot.

Since we are at the limit of resolution, it is not possible to go any deeper into the image, but from studying similar scenes at lesser magnitudes, I can state that there are no discontinuities in the scene.   The sharp cutting-off of the quadratic elements is a total illusion.   It all blends smoothly.

The name I chose for the image -- "Holey Seahorses" -- refers to the apparent hole in an otherwise pretty normal appearing Seahorse Valley scene.   It is not a call to the god of seahorses.

The rating of a 7 is just far enough above average to make the calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes worth the effort.   A trip to the FOTD web site at:to view the finished image is always worth the effort regardless of the calculation time.

An absolutely perfect day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Wednesday, with a cloudless sky, light winds, low humidity and a temperature of 84F 29C.   The fractal cats purred in delight.   My day was mildly busy taking up the slack while FL busied herself in the fractal garden.   If all goes well, tomorrow will be the same.   The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and how important is an individual person to the universe as a whole?
