Fractal of the Day

FOTD -- January 23, 2009   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's oversized parent fractal appears to have a problem with anemia.   It is no doubt a Mandeloid, but its main bay is shaped like a teardrop rather than a heart, and its buds shrink and vanish into the land of extreme periodicity well before reaching the area where East Valley should be.   In fact, no hint at all of an East Valley appears in the parent fractal.

I named the image "Straight Edge" because it lies on the edge of the main bay of its parent fractal in an area of such high periodicity that the buds have shriveled to invisibility and the edge appears as a straight line.   I rated the scene at a 7.

It is no surprise that the elements of the image have an iteration count well into the thousands.   The maxiter of 150,000 might be a bit excessive, but with the logmap turned off, it makes little diference.   Such a high iteration count makes the image a very slow one however, taking a full 43 minutes to finish on the fastest machines.

But salvation is at hand on the FOTD web site at:where I have sent the image on ahead to save Paul the calculation time.   But as always, I still suggest a wait of an hour or two to give him a chance to post the image.

Brilliant sun and a temperature of 37F 3C here at Fractal Central on Thursday not only gave the fractal cats a pleasant day in the sunny window, but it also melted the frozen drain.   My day was rather busy but still within reason.   The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and stay alert.
