FOTD -- July 10, 2008   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

I named today's image "Floating Fractal" because it lies floating amid much other debris in the interior of the western part of the main bay of the parent fractal, which seems unable to decide whether it is a Mandelbrot set or a quintic Mandeloid.

The rating of a 7 seems about right for the undecided fractal.

The five large amberish elements surround a skeletal quintic minibrot, which the inside=fmod option makes very obvious, and perhaps even too obvious.   Actually the scene is filled with ghostly skeletal minibrots, all of which are made obvious by the 'fmod' option.

The calculation time of 25 seconds, even with passes=1, is certainly right.   With passes=g the calculation time is an astonishing 11 seconds, but at the cost of some missed detail.   The passes=t option calculates the image in 17 seconds, but still misses a bit of detail.

A satisfactory compromise is to surf out to the FOTD web site at:
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html
and see the finished image posted there.

Heavy clouds and heavy rain in the midday hours gave way to hot sun and high humidity later in the afternoon here at Fractal Central.   The fractal cats kept cool in the temperature of 84F 29C under the cool air vent.

I kept cool by taking it easy.   The next FOTD fractal will be posted in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and be of sound constitution but don't disturb the peace.
