FOTD -- March 12, 2008   (Rating 7.5)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

I named today's image "Testing Testing" because I found it almost by accident while I was running a time test.   The rating of a 7.5 includes 1/2 point for my semi-skilled coloring, which is responsible for the rather moody silvery-blue palette.

The parent fractal is the result of combining various negative portions of Z^(-1.15) and Z^(-7.5), then adding (1/C).   This parent consists of a north-south string of large bays, with the southernmost bay being the most mandel-like.   The filaments extending from the buds along this bay terminate in rings, shaped more like lima beans than circles.   Today's image is located in the inside of one of these lima-bean rings.

The calculation time of 31-1/2 seconds is surprisingly short for such a pleasing fractal.   No one with a computer that can still handle DOS has a reason not to run the included parameter file.   And those with machines unskilled in DOS may see the image on the FOTD web site at:

A pleasant day prevailed at Fractal Central on Tuesday, with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 46F 8C.   The fractal cats spent the afternoon enjoying the periods of sun and being sulky when the clouds blocked the sun.

My day was eminently average, which, after the recent hectic activity, was all that could be hoped for.   The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and who first wrote 'It was a dark and stormy night.'?
