FOTD -- August 21, 2007   (Rating 6)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

As can be seen from the coordinates, today's image lies far out near the tip of the straight filament on the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set.   The scene is actually located deep in the East Valley of a far larger, but still tiny Midget.   For this reason I named the image "East Valley Scene".

I might have rated the image a 7, but negative-stem images of this sort are among the first things a fractal newcomer finds.   Since the area has been so thoroughly explored, I finally settled on a rating of a modest but honorable 6.

Even though the image is well within the range of arbitrary precision math, it is unexpectedly fast, finishing in only 3-2/3 minutes on the P4-2000.   On the P200 it would take around 20 minutes to finish -- still a speedy time.

Most of the effect is caused by the closeness of the escape radius.   To see a totally different image go to the 'Z' screen and change the bailout to 25.   It's too bad that the type=mandel formula permits only integer bailout values to be entered.   It would be interesting to see what happens when the bailout actually reaches the scene.

The image has been posted for convenient viewing on the FOTD web site at:

A steady rain made Monday an indoor day here at Fractal Central.   The fractal cats made the most of things by chasing each other through the hallway all morning, then sleeping for most of the afternoon.   My day was occupied with routine work.   The next FOTD fractal image should be posted in about 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and wonder what it's all about.
