Fractal of the Day

FOTD -- August 13, 2007   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image uses a bit of fractal trickery to make its point.   Instead of the usual blank black inside and outside equal-iteration bands, the image was rendered with the inside set to 'bof61' and the outside set to 'real'.

The generating formula subtracts 250 parts of Z^(-0.9) from 250 parts of Z^(-1.1) and adds straight C to create a parent fractal that resembles the Mandelbrot set fairly closely, but has sausage-shaped holes at the end of its filaments.   The greatest surprise is the empty triangle that appears where East Valley would normally be found.   Today's image is located on the outside of the southern shore line of this triangle.

I rated the image at a 7 rather reluctantly.   The colors are a bit too busy for maximum effect.   The name "Mainstream Fractal" has ho connection at all to the image.   It's simply the first thing I could think of.

The image is a rather slow one, with a calculation time of over 18 minutes on the fireball P4-2000, and well over one hour on the old P200 machine.   But calculation will be no issue for those who view the finished image on the FOTD web site at:
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html

Sunday was spoiled here at Fractal Central when the temperature reached a high of 90F 32C.   But if the humidity had been higher, it would have been worse.   The fractal cats must have agreed, for they seemed totally satisfied with their life of perpetual indoor confinement.

My day was spent recovering from Saturday's outing.   The next in the near endless series of FOTD fractal images will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and step lightly.
