Fractal of the Day

FOTD -- January 15, 2007   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image can best be described as 'different'.   True, there is a Mandelbrot midget at the center, but, unlike most minibrots, this midget is actually doing something.   As I see it, the midget is skimming through the lower part of a cloud of fractal debris, with mostly clear air under it and even denser debris above.

The formula behind all this madness combines 0.4 part of Z^(3.3) with 4 parts of Z^(0.1) then adds C to create a parent fractal consisting of two large bays, three large buds and numerous rather large lakes surrounding the main figure.   Today's scene is located in a fragmentary valley separating the two bays.

To add life to the scene I rendered it with the inside parts set to 'fmod'.   The proximity factor of 0.38245, which controls the amount of background debris, is rather critical.

I named the image "Flying Mandelbrot", which is what it looks like, and rated it at a 7, which might be a bit generous.

The render time however is a very speedy 2-1/2 minutes, which should try the patience of no one.   For extra convenience, the completed GIF image will soon be posted to the FOTD web site at:

Continued heavy clouds and occasional light rain kept a damper on things here at Fractal Central on Sunday.   The temperature of 46F 8C made little difference to the fractal cats, who, unlike their normal selves, behaved pretty much like angels.   My day was slow, with little to do but take it easy, watch TV and explore the world of fractals.   The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and ponder the nature of reality.
