FOTD -- December 09, 2006   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Though the formula behind the image, Z^(0.947)+Z^(-0.947)+C, is most arbitrary, today's fractal is different enough to earn it a rating of 7.   The parent fractal appears as a smooth-edged egg-shaped oval with only a tiny bit of Mandel chaos on the western edge.   The FOTD for today was found in the area where the chaos merges into the smooth edge of the egg-shaped oval.

The image is composed partly of inside and partly of outside stuff.   The outside parts have degenerated into little more than a field of scattered dots, leaving most of the image made of inside stuff.   But this inside stuff responds quite nicely to the 'bof61' inside fill, which completes the image and reveals a Mandelbrot midget at the center.

I have named the image "Spots Before the Eyes" because it is composed mostly of spots of various shapes, sizes, and colors.   The calculation time of almost 12 minutes is a bit slow, but still worth the effort.   And finally, if all else fails, the image is available for viewing on the FOTD web site at:

A very cold day here at Fractal Central on Friday, with a temperature of 23F -5C and flurries of snow, went un-noticed by the fractal cats, who passed the day sleeping and chasing each other up and down the hallway.   My day was spent clearing away a few small odd jobs that have been hanging around for several days.   The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours, give or take an hour or two.   Until then, take care and expect the unexpected.
