Fractal of the Day

FOTD -- August 08, 2006   (Rating 8)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's rather unusual image takes us 414 levels up the logarithmic ladder to see what the Z^sqrt(2)+C fractal looks like at that lofty height.   Actually the fractal doesn't look like much.   It is little more than a cut-off blob.   But on the southwest edge of the blob, a distorted pseudo-Mandelbrot midget lies.   Today's scene is located in what passes for the north branch of Seahorse Valley of this midget.

I named the image "Up the Ladder".   And why not?   We had to climb 414 levels to reach the parent fractal.

In my opinion, the image is unusual enough to be worth a rating of an 8.   Others may rate it differently.

Most of the coloring effect was achieved by rendering the image with the 'outside' set to 'atan'.   This option usually creates images with far too much chaos.   With today's image however, it works better than any other.

The render time of a little under 13 minutes is rather slow.   It will be more convenient to download the finished product from the FOTD web site, which may be accessed at:

With a temperature of 88F 31C and high humidity, Monday turned out too sultry for human comfort, though the fractal cats, being inhuman, did not mind.   They spent the day chasing each other up and down the hall.   The hall is carpeted; the dining room is not.   Nicholas has not yet grasped that there is less traction on a polished floor than on a carpet, and after zooming down the hall, he slid several times head first into the wall at the back of the dining room.   His thick head suffered no damage.

The work is still under control, which means the next FOTD will likely appear on schedule in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and walk with fractals in your eyes.
