FOTD -- November 22, 2005   (Rating 7)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Do witches exist?   The answer to that question depends on the definition of the word 'witch'.   There certainly are those who practice the old Wiccan religion, but I doubt that they wear pointed black hats, brew evil potions in cauldrons, and fly around on brooms.   But then there are fractal witches.

Today's image shows the twisted kiss of a fractal witch.   I generally prefer not to name images after body parts, but today's image is so obvious that I could not resist the temptation to give it the relatively harmless name, "A Witches Kiss".

The image is actually one of the Julia sets of the "Viol" image that appeared as the FOTD for November 3, 2005 -- the FOTD that had the shortest discussion of all time.   Today's Julia set intersects the 'Viol' image at a point in the upper center of the bud on the extreme left edge of the 'Viol' image.

The interesting parts of today's image consist of a large 'inside' area made active by the 'bof60' inside fill.   In this case, it is the most effective of all the inside fills.

I rated the image at an above-average 7.   Part of that rating is due to the extremely brief render time of 80 seconds.   But no image is ever so fast that there is no need to post it to the FOTD web site at:

While browsing the local news stand this evening, I came upon a special issue of 'SciAm' magazine devoted to the human mind.   Being scientific, the magazine's articles pretty much forget the abstract mind and focus on the physical brain, which is only to be expected.   So far so good.   But one headline on the cover caught my attention.   It referred to an inside article about how the brain creates reality.   I immediately started to ponder the consequences of this statement.

Since the physical brain is a part of reality, we now have the brain creating the mind that is creating the brain that is creating reality.   It's a circular loop.   All we can know of the brain is contained in a series of images produced in the mind by the senses, yet the mind is an emergent phenomenon of the brain.   The brain creates the mind; the mind creates the brain.   It's almost funny.   No wonder science is so fascinating.   It does so well when it investigates the intuitive world of the senses; it flounders so awkwardly when it strays into the strange world of metaphysics.

A cold rain fell steadily all Monday afternoon here at Fractal Central.   The cats checked the conditions twice, but never ventured off the covered porch.   They passed most of the day sleeping on their shelf by the large window, undoubtedly dreaming of warm sunshine.   In my department, the work was finished on schedule, and all else went well.   The next FOTD fractal will be posted on schedule 24 hours from now, plus or minus an hour or two.   Until then, take care, and beware of kissing witches.   They just might be real.
