FOTD -- November 18, 2005   (Rating 6)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

When I checked my e-mail this morning, I found a message from my credit-card company informing me that my card had been charged 4,900 dollars for a big-screen TV set.   The e-mail instructed me to click on the included link and go to the card company's web site if I thought an error had been made.   Since I have never purchased a big-screen TV, it appeared that some fraud had indeed taken place.   Luckily for me, I open all my e-mail in text mode, and I noticed at once that the link was fraudulent.   The link actually was to a web site with an address something like 243.43.561.37.   The letter was a 'phishing' scam, designed to steal my personal information.   (The e-mail informing me that I had won a lottery was also a scam.)   The only thing genuine in all this is today's image.

Today's fractal shows a Julia set of the Z^1.11+C Mandeloid as it appears 11 levels up the logarithmic spiral, where the parent fractal resembles a huge stretched out ellipse.   Today's Julia set is associated with a point near a small valley on the southern end of the ellipse.

The Julia set resembles an off-center star, which I have colored in a rather sensational manner.   The maxiter of 256 gives every color in the 256-color map a role to play, though only the first 75 or so colors play a significant role in the appearance of the image.

The rating of a 6 may be taken as a recognition of my fractal-coloring skill.   Normally, my humility prevents me from admitting how great I am, but for one day I'll forget my humility.   The name "Julia Star" refers to the shape of the fractal.   The render time of 27 seconds is fast enough to please even the most impatient fractalist.

For the convenience of those with over-qualified computers, the completed GIF image has been posted to the FOTD web site, which may be accessed at:

The weather was mostly sunny here at Fractal Central on Thursday, but the wind was up and the temperature never rose over 41F 5C.   The cats went outside on schedule.   Within an hour they decided that warmth was better than adventure.   At one point I heard them chasing each other up and down the stairs, something they once did every day but have not done in months.   I guess their inner kittens are acting up.   The next FOTD will appear 24 hours from now in its full glory.   Until then, take care, and be at peace with your fractals.
