FOTD -- November 17, 2005   (Rating 6)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image subtracts a little Z^5 from some Z^3 before adding C.   The result is a midget not quite like any I have seen before.   In fact, it's not only the midget that's weird.   The whole area of the parent fractal in which the midget lies is kind of weird.   It deserves more investigation, which I will likely give it in a day or two.

The real p1 and p2 parameters are critical.   Even a small change totally loses the scene.   The rating of 6 seems about right for the image.   The render time of 1-1/2 minutes is lightning fast, but a download of the finished image is more convenient.   That download may be found on the FOTD web site at:

While browsing the December issue of 'Scientific American' magazine recently, I came upon a speculative article stating that spacetime might be a kind of fluid much like the luminiferous ether of 19th century physics.   If it were so, it would mean the end of 20th century ideas such as relativity and quantum mechanics, but since these theories are mutually incompatible, their time to fade into the past might be approaching anyway.   I may have more to say about all this new stuff once I have read the article more carefully and given the topic more thought.   Right now I will only wonder what the spacetime fluid is supposed to be made of.

Wednesday was warm enough here at Fractal Central, but it was breezy, and there were frequent showers.   The cats spent the afternoon sulking on their window shelf, watching the wind blow and the showers move over.   My day was fairly routine, with only a minimum of sulking.   The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and is the world of fractals good, evil, neutral; or is it whatever one makes of it?
