FOTD -- September 16, 2005   (Rating NA)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image shows a very deep scene on a filament extending from the large midget on the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set.   Since I put almost no effort into coloring the image, I could neither name nor rate it.   Being well into the range of arbitrary precision math, the scene renders in a slow 99 minutes.   But I have sent the finished image on ahead to Paul at the FOTD web site, where it is posted ready for download.   The FOTD web site may be accessed at:

We have come to the end of the current burst of philosophy, which I believe has been the most protracted so far in FOTD history.   Little remains to be said, except a wrap-up of my basic beliefs.

To begin, I believe that the traditional western idea of an all good, knowing and powerful man-god living in a mansion in the sky is unfounded.   The belief is comforting to many, but such a being could not exist.   It would be a logical self-contradiction.   I feel that a conscious creative power does exist however, which is the source of the universe and sustains it in the same manner as our sleeping minds create and, for a short time, sustain the worlds of our dreams.   I believe that prayer, when done in the right manner, is helpful, not because it might persuade some god to come to our aid, but because it enables us to marshal our own inner resources to cope with the situation that faces us.

I believe that the afterlife concept needs to be better defined before the question of its existence or non-existence can be answered.   If time is not a universal absolute, as relativity shows, an afterlife need not be 'after'.   I feel that the two extreme views are too simplistic to be correct.   Without physical bodies, we obviously cannot continue on in another world with conditions exactly like those of this life.   And the view of total oblivion, while firmly believed by many skeptics, disregards too many mysteries about the generation and nature of consciousness, as well as the nature of reality.   In my opinion, there is something that will be experienced when we die, which may or may not be considered as happening 'after' our deaths.   The real question is whether enough of our earthly selves will remain for us to still be considered the same individuals.

As for more mundane things, I believe that people do see ghosts, and hauntings do occur.   But these things are more likely to be the results of little-understood physical energies than the tricks of disembodied spirits.

I have been a sky-watcher for most of my life, and so far I have failed to see a single thing that I could not identify.   I therefore feel that physical UFO's carrying alien visitors from other worlds are no more than an entertaining fantasy.

I have personally experienced precognition, so I know that at least this one paranormal phenomenon, which is rationally impossible, does in fact exist.   This leads me to wonder how many of the other paranormal claims, though irrational, actually contain some truth.

And last but not least, my political standpoint is a little to the right of center.

Thursday here at Fractal Central was too warm, too humid, and had too many showers for the fractal cats, who satisfied themselves with less than one hour in the yard.   Needless to say, it was necessary to break out the tuna in the evening.   Today is starting about the same, with more showers in the area.   For me it looks like a relatively normal day coming up, which should leave time enough for fractals.   The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and always reduce complexity to simplicity.
