FOTD -- September 13, 2005   (Rating NA)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image is a scene in the fractal that results when 2 parts of Z^(-0.9) are subtracted from Z^(1.1) and (1/C) is added.   The extra interest was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'real'.   Since I put almost no effort into the image, I did not bother naming or rating it.   The render time of 15 minutes is fair enough, but for convenience the already-rendered image is available on the FOTD web site at:
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html

The philosophy continues in the philofractal version of today's discussion.   But the present outburst is nearing its end, and full attention will soon return to the proper topic of fractals.

All I have said over the past two weeks about hope and the meaning of life might reassure those who already see things as I have come to do, but without proof it will do little if anything to change the minds of those who are convinced that their senses give the most accurate view of the world.   To be convincing, my argument would need to be accompanied by objective proof of subjective truth, which by its nature is impossible to supply.

One objection to my view is that it makes people feel better, and there is a strong tendency for people to want to believe things such as religion, which make them feel better.   Of course, the fact that a certain belief brings happiness does not necessarily mean the belief is false.   The belief in oblivion after death makes the suicidally depressed feel a little better, but this is no evidence that a belief in oblivion after death is false.

Another objection is far stronger.   All the inner realities, the higher forms of consciousness I have been talking about seem to be thoroughly embedded in natural, objective, empirical processes in the brain.   Thus they are not higher in any genuine sense, but merely different types of biomaterial events in the biomaterial brain, best studied by empirical cognitive science.   I have therefore demonstrated no higher realities beyond the physical.   I might add that, in the view of science, even if there were higher inner realities, they would have no means of validation, and could therefore not be taken seriously.

After reading what I have just written, it appears I might have worked myself into a hole which I cannot get out of.   I might have made a stronger case for the skeptical view than for my hopeful view.   Have I come this far only to self-destruct with the goal in sight?   Stay tuned for the attempt to bail myself out.   It will take about two more discussions, and there is no guarantee of success.

Absolute perfection describes the weather at Fractal Central on Monday.   It also describes the behavior of the fractal cats, Thomas the orange and Tippy the tabby.   My behavior is never perfect, so it doesn't describe me.   Today is starting perfect.   I expect more perfection from the duo.   The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and look for light.
