FOTD -- September 10, 2005   (Rating 5)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's image subtracts 10 parts of Z^(-0.4) from Z and adds (1/C).   The resulting parent fractal is a Mandelbrot set distorted into a hyperbola.   The scene is located on the shoreline of this hyperbola.   The special effects were achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'atan'.   Since I put almost no effort into the image, I gave it no name or rating.   The render time of 22 minutes is a bit dragging.   The most efficient way of viewing the image is to visit the FOTD web site at:
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html
and download the completed GIF image from there.

We have reached the point in our philosophical ramblings where we must leave common sense behind, and set out boldly, perhaps a bit recklessly, on our journey into the world beyond reality.   I have no proof of the things I will write from now on, but then I need no proof, since I am not doing science.   I will say nothing that has not been said many times before.   Some will know that I am wrong and consider me just another deluded wishful-thinker.   Others who have long thought as I think will know that there is some possibility of truth in the things I say.   I might give one or two some food for thought that could help them find their way.   Most likely, my words, like those of so many others, will be of little consequence.

Why must we leave the familiar, comfortable, common-sense world of objective reality, with its sensory-observed objects that are really out there, waiting to be measured by science?   We must do so because the answers to our questions about hope and meaning are not to be found in that outer world.   In the context of the world of objective reality, a human being is a mass of animated bio-matter with the ability to reproduce its own kind.   The behavior of this body gives the mistaken impression that it is inhabited and controlled by something apart from itself called a person.   When the mass comes to the end of its life, the animation ceases and the mass starts to fall apart.   Since the 'person' is nothing more than the behavior of the body, it is absurd to wonder what happens to the person when the body dies.   The 'person' simply ceases to exist.   He vanishes into the past.   The search for meaning is cut short before it gets started.

To have even a chance of finding meaning, we must realize that the outer world we observe through our senses is nothing more than a consistent series of mental images that exists in our mind.   Something must exist to cause the impacts on our sense organs, but it need not be identical to, nor even vaguely resemble, the mental images it creates.   This should not be too shocking.   Relativity and quantum theory already tell us that the very large, the very fast, the very heavy, and the very small have attributes that are far different from those of the world of everyday experience.

The big question now starts to make sense.   How can unconscious matter create conscious thought?   The answer is that it cannot.   The brain is not composed of unconscious matter.   Matter itself is an image in the mind, and mental images are the behavior of consciousness.   The matter of the brain is composed of consciousness, so why should it be so striking that consciousness appears to come from the brain?

But does consciousness originate in the brain?   Here I suggest we picture ourselves in a huge television showroom.   On the wall before us sit hundreds of television receivers, all tuned to the same program.   Some expensive receivers have sharp colorful images on their screens; others, with damaged circuitry, have distorted images, wrong colors.   Some receivers display only tiny images in black and white, some have died and the screens are blank, but all the images, however vivid or deficient, arise from the same single program source.

In my opinion, the human brain is like a television receiver, picking up and rectifying a universal field of consciousness into the appearance of a separate conscious entity.   If the brain circuitry is damaged, the resulting consciousness is distorted, but the brain circuitry is not the source of the awareness.   Independent self-awareness is an illusion.   We are actually pinched-off sparks of the universal consciousness who have forgotten what we are.

The mystery of what stays the same throughout our lives also has been solved.   Since there is only one consciousness that ever has and ever will exist, how could our consciousness change.   True, there is still much that we do not yet understand.   For example, does this mean we will eventually experience the lives of every conscious entity that could ever exist in the universe?   It is a frightening thought, but one that cannot so easily be dismissed.   There is a saying, "what you do unto others, you do unto yourself".

Have we finally found the hope and meaning we have been searching for?   Not exactly, but we are well on the way.   Stay tuned in the days to come for more enlightenment or nonsense.   (It all depends on the world view of the reader.)

Only some haze and a few clouds kept the day from being absolutely perfect here at Fractal Central on Friday.   The fractal cats were angelic.   Today is starting the same but with light fog.   I expect good things from the duo.   For me the work is minimal, which should give lots of time to ponder my philosophy. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and what would it mean if nothing but nothing really were real?
