FOTD -- September 03, 2005   (Rating NONE)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

The fractal part of today's discussion is very brief.   The part that appears in only the philofractal version is far longer and rather controversial.

Today's image shows a scene in the fractal created by the formula (Z^2)+(0.3*Z^4.1)+C.   I gave it no rating and no name.   It renders in 15 minutes from the included parameter file.   The finished image is available on the FOTD web site at:
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html

Those who cannot handle politics should stop reading now.   There is nothing of a fractal nature in the rant that follows.   (I really should know better than to bring up the topic of politics.   It always works me into a froth.   But since I am already madder than hell and worked into a froth anyway, I have nothing to lose by my OT rant.   And I have counted to 10 ten times.)

It's been a rough week here in the U.S.   Emotions are running high, even here at normally peaceful Fractal Central.   The situation here is with fractal lady, who is a great person but sometimes seems to think she's still a teenager demonstrating against the Vietnam war.   I often tell her that, as one matures, they should forget the liberal dreams of their youth and realize that the world simply does not work the way liberal idealists assume.

Of course, like all liberal thinkers, she is beyond help.   She *knows* that all people are created potentially equal, and if given an equal chance will achieve equality.   While watching the hurricane aftermath unfolding on TV yesterday, she casually commented that the news networks must be biased in their reporting.   They were showing only the blacks who were looting, and were doing it to give the viewers the impression that more blacks are criminals.   I replied that maybe almost all the rioters actually were black.   After all, New Orleans is a mostly black city, and blacks have a higher percentage of poverty.

Then she snapped back that the black people were rioting because they are poor and are angry at the social injustice and racism that is holding them in their poverty.   I replied that maybe the rioters' bad attitude was not a result of their poverty; maybe their poverty was a result of their bad attitude.   I added that her statement also implies that she and I are partly responsible for the suffering we were seeing on TV.   After all, we are a part of society.

Being a liberal, (liberals are big on self-blame), she agreed vigorously.   I asked her what then should we do to fix things.   She replied that the government should give the poor people enough to enable them to lift themselves out of their dire situation.   She explained that poverty is defined as the lack of enough money to lead a good life, and the solution to a lack of money obviously is to supply money.   I said something about being simple-minded.   I did not even bother to bring up things like the affirmative action programs, quotas, race-norming, etc.   Luckily, before a real argument started, she got up and left the room.

We have yet to discuss things today, but then the TV has not yet been turned on.

On the cat front, the weather on Friday was perfect and the cats had a great day.   The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours, but be warned, politics is still the hot topic around F.C., and I am not in the mood to remain silent.   Until next time, take care, and if one is not liberal in his youth, he has no heart.   If he is not conservative in his later years, he has no brain.   (Disagreements welcome)
