Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

It's All Fool's Day, both at Fractal Central and elsewhere, but no one is fooling, at least on the local media.   The air is filled with thoughts and talk of death -- that ultimate bugaboo that always lurks in the background, spoiling whatever meager satisfaction we might wring from life -- the ultimate puzzle that our greatest minds can only bow down before in abject surrender -- the assault that can be blunted only by acceptance of defeat -- the random wrong-turn of evolution -- the craziness of an all-good God, who tells us that better things await us in a world beyond death but spitefully conceals all signs of that world.   And what is life other than a period of time spent in a futile attempt to divert our attention from the dark end that awaits every one of us. . . .   Oh well, at least those of us on these lists have fractals to help divert our attention . . . at least for a while. . . .

I have been further inspired since yesterday.   The resulting outburst of philosophy on the topic of death will come on the Philofractal list in a few days.   I have much to say.   Do I think the topic is appropriate on a fractal philosophy list? -- you better believe it!

For the present moment, we have a fractal to discuss, a fractal sliced in the Elliptic direction through the Julibrot, a fractal that I have named "Forever Plunging".   The image is a scene somewhere in the area of the Julibrot associated with East Valley of the Mandelbrot set.   The rather silly looking double spirals with big swollen noses are there.   These are familiar enough, but the straight edge that plunges beneath the surface is something seen in neither the Mandelbrot nor the Julia fractals.   The vague clouds of streaming gnats on the left side of the image are also things never seen in the usual fractals.   The rating of a five seems appropriate for such an undistinguished fractal.   The render time of over 17 minutes is a bit slow, but can be avoided by downloading the completed image from the FOTD web site at:

The skies remained cloudy on Thursday here at Fractal Central, but the rain failed to appear and the temperature reached 57F 14C, which was warm enough for the fractal cats, who spent several hours in the yard, watching for signs of trouble.   The trouble never arrived, and the day ended peacefully.

This morning is starting partly cloudy and mild, with rain once again forecast for later in the day.   Let's hope it's after the duo has completed their adventure.   My adventure will be in the world of fractals, the next of which will appear in 24 hours.   Until then, take care, and stay alive.
