FOTD -- March 31, 2004   (Rating 6)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

For today's FOTD I depart from my usual unending stream of midgets and present one of the many other objects that exist in the world of fractals.

The object I chose resembles something that might be found crawling along the floor of some pre-historic sea.   It might be a trilobite, it might be something entirely unknown, but whatever it is, it has been extinct for many millions of years.   I named the picture "Pre-History" in recognition of something that came and went so long ago.

Today's image is part of the fractal that results when the Z of yesterday's formula is changed to Z^(1.6), and the other parameters are kept the same.   At first glance it appears as though no midgets lie hidden in its depths, but the midgets are there, and one of them will appear as tomorrow's FOTD.

The rating of 6 combines with the render time of 34 minutes to give an overall value of 18.   The rendering may be avoided by downloading the finished GIF image from the FOTD web site at:

Unusually chilly temperatures and heavy clouds here at Fractal Central on Tuesday limited the fractal cats' outdoor time to less than 1/2 hour.   Considering that the temperature never rose above 45F 7C, their moods were quite good.   Today is starting similarly unpleasant.   I expect a similar reaction from the duo.

It's now time to put the day's tasks behind me, so until next time, take care, and which way did that fractal go?
