Fractal of the Day

FOTD -- September 04, 2000   (Rating 6)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today we have a picture of an ocean wave.   It somewhat resembles that famous Japanese print of a giant wave, though in this case, the wave is moving from right to left.

And the wave in today's picture is not a water wave, it is a wave in space.   What we actually see in the image is three-dimensional space being twisted in four-dimensional hyperspace until it forms a loose spiral.

The small bits and pieces scattered through the picture, could be stars, but whatever they are, they reveal the mathematical tension surging through the scene.

I found today's image by accident in the second version of the 'parent' fractal, while searching for midgets.   I found no midget, but today's out-of-the-ordinary picture more than makes up for the lack of a midget.

I named the picture "Surging Water".   I would have named it "The Wave", but I seem to remember giving an early FOTD that name.   The rating of 6 seems pretty fair for an image such as today's.

The parameter file renders in 10 minutes, a time long enough to make a download of the GIF image file the better way of viewing the giant wave.   The file of the image may be found on Usenet at:

and on the Web at:

The fractal weather today was mostly cloudy and very humid, with a temperature of 82F (28C) and rain and thunder most of the afternoon and evening.   The fractal cats stayed indoors through it all, sulking in their chosen places.

The fractosophy went nowhere, and the article still awaits final editing.   It will be a few days yet before the article is ready, but when it finally arrives, it will have been worth the wait.

I see it's already past midnight -- time to call it a night, shut down the fractal shoppe, feed the cats, and ponder tomorrow.   Until then, take care, and see you soon.
