FOTD -- September 02, 2000   (Rating 4)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Today's fractal is a strange thing, hard to describe and even harder to give a name to.   The name I finally decided on:  "Fractal Gravel", represents more than anything else the mood I felt after studying the image on the screen for 10 minutes, trying to think of a better name.   The rating of 4 is arbitrary.   The picture could just as easily been rated a 3, 5 or 6.   I decided on a 4 because the colors show that they were done in haste.

The formula behind all the gravel is number six in my series of 12 MandNewt formulae.   These formulas are actually variations of the Ikenaga function, several examples of which are included in the fractint.frm file.

Since the image is so hard to describe, I'm not going to try.   The way to see the indescribable is to run the parameter file and wait a couple minutes, or take a few minutes to pick up the GIF image on the internet.

That image may be found posted to Usenet at:
alt.binaries.pictures.fractals
and posted to Paul Lee's web site at:

The fractal weather today was partly cloudy and humid, with a temperature of 86F (30C).   Since it did not rain, the fractal cats took a couple hours to romp in the yard.   Of course, when 8-year-old cats romp, there's not much action to watch.

The long fractosophical article stagnated again today, though I did post several responses to the Philofractal list.   I hope to have the article ready this week end, but I might wait until the list quiets down a bit before posting it.

It's now 10:40pm eastern fractal time, and all is well.   It's time to shut down the fractal shoppe, feed the cats, and call it a night.   Until tomorrow, take care, and don't let the fractals go to your head.
