Focke-Wulf 190F-8
The F was the first 190 specifically designed as a ground attack
plane. It included additional armor for the pilot and engine as well
as being able to carry various configurations of bombs and rockets.
"Black 3" Piloted by Eugen
Lörcher of 5/SG 2 Wk. Nr. Unknown
On 8 May, 1945 Lörcher belly landed this F-8 at Aufhausen, GE to escape
the Russians. On board was his fiancé who was riding in the rear
fuselage (can you imagine being stuffed in there during a belly
landing!). Each year he and his wife return to the site to celebrate
their escape with a toast of champagne.
This
particular plane is unusual in that it is a combination of camouflage
paint, primer and bare metal. It is my assumption that it was late
war production when materials were short and getting the planes off the
assembly line was paramount.
