Oriental Crafts and Recipes
Fine artwork has been a tradition in China for many generations.
Many of the arts date back to as early as 4000 BC.
Some of the most recognizable is their
Calligraphy.
There are over 40,000 characters in the Chinese language and many are often used as
designs on art objects such as textiles, clay, metals, stone,
and hand made paper. Characters such as the ones
for kindness, peace, love, luck, happiness or joy
on a paper scroll would make a lovely addition to
any home. As you may imagine this is not an easy
artform. For some basics see
Jun Shan's site.
Feng Shui is the ancient Asian art of improving the
flow of energy, or chi, through careful
placement of specific items in the home or office.
For thousands of years, practitioners of Feng Shui
have achieved harmony with nature and their
surroundings.
Chinese Noodle Salad
I'm not sure of the authenticity but I can say that it is a favorite around here.
- 1 medium head finely shredded green cabbage
- 1/2 cup slivered almonds
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
- 3 to 4 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 package vegetarian ramen soup (baked noodles)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 1/3 cup seasoned rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar or other sweetener
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- fresh cilantro (optional)
Toast almonds and sesame seeds in an ovenproof dish in a 375° F oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly brown. Place shredded cabbage in a large salad bowl with onions, almonds, sesame seeds, and coarsely crushed uncooked ramen noodles.
Empty the packet of ramen noodle seasoning into a small bowl stirring in the sesame
oil, seasoned rice vinegar, sugar, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and pour over the
salad. Toss to mix, then allow to stand 30 minutes for the noodles to soften.
Garnish with fresh cilantro just before serving, if desired.
