This book examines the need for reconciliation between the democratic dislike of war and the appropriate use of the military instrument in world politics. It questions whether the results obtained in war are worth the expenditures made and contends that victory gained from total war is illusory and not commensurate with the terrible cost. The Foreword is by Admiral Arleigh Burke, former Chief of Naval Operations and founder of The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. The book is well documented and is a good source. |
