Frequently Asked Questions
about ANV Insurance

Q. Who is the Regimental insurance contact?
A. This is yet to be decided, but will be announced soon.
Q. When are the forms and payment due?
A. February 1st, 2009.
Q. Who has to have insurance?
A. According to the Operational Guidelines of the Liberty Greys, and
the By-laws of the ANV, every
person taking the field must have liability and accidental insurance.
For purposes of this FAQ, these people will be termed
‘combatants’, even though the person in question
may not be
carrying a weapon (i.e. medical staff, minors serving as musicians,
etc).
Every reenactor, military or civilian, adult or youth, who participates
in an event with the Liberty Greys, must have accidental insurance.
Heads of households, all combatant members, and all all single
reenactors should have liability insurance. Non-combatant members, ie.
civilians, who are heads of households should have liability insurance
and accidental insurance.
Q. So my 14 year old son, the drummer, is considered a combatant?
A. Yes. This is an ANV policy that carries down to us.
Q. What is liability insurance?
A. Liability Coverage protects you against claims of bodily injury
liability, property damage liability and the litigation costs to defend
against such claims. This is protection against the spectator who trips
over your tent rope and takes a header into your fire pit.
Q. What is accidental insurance?
A. Coverage against injuries or damages sustained by yourself while
participating in sponsored activities. A member is also covered while
traveling, directly and without interruption, to and from any
officially sponsored activity and his or her home or place of
residence. He, or she, is not covered for pre-existing medical
conditions, injuries or illnesses sustained before the event, etc. This
pays for you when you trip over your tent rope and take a header into
your fire pit.
Q. How do I sign up to get insurance?
A. Units collect money from their members, and submit rosters of who is
insured to the Liberty Greys. Your unit may ask you for payment or it
may be included in your unit dues. Check with your officers and NCOs
for specific details.
Q. What if I don’t have a unit?
A. All combatants must be a member of a Liberty Greys unit. Civilians
not attached to a specific unit may insure through a unit willing to
let them do so or should contact the Liberty Grey’s Civilian
Coordinator.
Q. Who provides the insurance?
A. Units insure under liability and accidental policies provided by the
1st Division, Army of Northern Virginia (henceforth the ANV)
to its
members.
Q. Do we have to use the ANV insurance?
A. Yes, according the ANV By-Laws, all member units must take ANV
insurance.
Q. What are sponsored activities?
A. Accidental insurance is covered by a per member basis. Any event of
which the ANV has been notified is covered. Liability
insurance
is by a per event basis. In order to keep costs within
reason,
the ANV is now insuring for liability at only ANV Max effort events,
and designated Battalion events.
Q. What kind of events does the ANV insurance cover?
A. For accidental, reenactments, living histories, school programs,
unit meetings and social gatherings, and other similar official unit
activities, of which the ANV has been notified. For liability, only ANV
and Regimental events are covered.
Q. What if we add a meeting or event?
A. Send notice to the ANV prior to the event and they will add it to
the calendar of insured activities with the carrier. Note
this is
covered for accidental only.
Q. You keep saying ‘carrier’?
A. Insurance companies are sometimes referred to as carriers (of your
policy). It’s the same thing.
Q. How much are we covered for with these two policies?
A. Unfortunately, we can’t post that on the internet but once
your unit has purchased insurance, your unit should receive a
certificate of coverage which spells that all out.
Q. How much does the ANV coverage cost?
A. $12 per household for liability insurance and $8 per person for
accidental coverage. Note, minors who take the field of battle should
have liability insurance in addition to the head of household's.
Q. Does everyone in my family need both?
A. Every combatant must have liability and accidental insurance.
Additional family members should have accidental insurance. If you
don’t have a combatant in your family, then the head of the
household should carry both accidental and liability insurance.
Q. How about an example?
A. Example 1: Mike is a soldier and his son, Mike Jr., is a fourteen
year old drummer with the unit. In addition, Mike’s wife Mary
and
daughter Judy also attend events. Mike and Mike Jr. both require
liability and accidental insurance and his wife and daughter should
each have accidental coverage. That’s $12+$8 for
Mike, $12+$8 for Mike Jr., $8 for Mary, and $8 for Judy; a
total
of $56 for the family.
Example 2: Tom, his wife, and daughter are all civilian reenactors. As
head of the household, Tom should carry liability and accidental
coverage ($12+$8), and his wife and daughter should carry accidental
coverage at $8 each for a family total of $45.
Q. Can I buy liability insurance without accidental?
A. You must have both if you are a combatant, or non combatant head of
household.
Q. Can I buy accidental insurance without buying liability insurance?
A. Only if someone in your family has purchased liability insurance.
Q. OK, I get hurt at an event and end up in the Emergency Room.
Who’s paying?
A. At the time of treatment, you are, if you have the ANV accidental
insurance, unless your primary insurance from work satisfies the
hospital. This policy is considered to be secondary insurance coverage
which means that it’s gap insurance it’s intended
to pay
what your primary policy from work, etc., doesn’t.
Q. What if I don’t have other insurance?
A. Then this policy becomes primary and it will cover your eligible
medical expenses.
Q. So how do I get paid?
A. In almost every case, you will be expected to pay for costs not
covered by your primary insurance carrier at the time of service. You
should obtain a claim form from your company commander and complete it.
The ANV coverage is excellent and has thus far reimbursed claimants
very quickly.
Q. What if he doesn’t have a claim form?
A. He can obtain one from his battalion commander or the ANV directly.
Q. When does the ANV insurance become effective?
A. The policy year starts on April 1st. You must be paid up by then.
Q. What about new members?
A. They should pay their insurance on joining the unit and the ANV
should be notified of the addition. Their insurance becomes effective
upon notification of the new member to the ANV.
Q. What if reenactors from other units fall in with us for an event?
A. Reenactors from Liberty Greys units are required to have insurance
from their own companies. They will be covered for any event on your
unit's schedule, which has been submitted to the ANV. Reenactors from
outside the battalion should be required to provide proof of insurance,
or purchase ANV insurance. Note, any ANV member with a current ANV
membership card has insurance.
Q. What if I don’t buy ANV insurance?
A. Then you cannot participate in events with Liberty Greys units.
