PERSIA & BIDJAR

Traditional size
Arabian mare and foal
by: Kathi Bogucki

The following pair were painted and photographed by Sue Sudekom as portrait models of her beloved horse Sierawood Tezlu and his dam Lurad. Thank you Sue for allowing me to use these lovely photos.

My newest sculptures have given me the opportunity to combine two of my greatest passions, Arabian horses and Persian rugs.
I wanted to depict a favoured mare and her young foal awakening from an afternoon nap under the shade of their master's tent. I am always fascinated to hear of how the nomadic peoples would often allow the horses to freely roam in and out of the family tents. The beautiful rugs that provided flooring in those tents were so durable that they could easily withstand years of heavy use, even from the hooves of horses.
A favorite image that I wanted to invoke with this pair is the scene depicted in Landseer's painting, "The Arab Tent." I love the idea of horses being treated as members of the family, with all of the comforts afforded to that status.
For several years, I have carried an image in my mind of how I wanted these two to look. It isn't always easy to transfer an idea into reality though. . . The roughed in clay of the mare sat on my sculpting table for well over a year before I settled on this particular pose. Her colt, on the other hand, took shape and was finished over the course of a couple of weeks. There was something about having the mare finished that made the creation of the colt happen quite smoothly. Perhaps it was because I had already fought my way once through the difficult task of sculpting a horse that was laying down but still bio-mechanically correct. The experience does serve to illustrate the fact that you can never really tell how long it's going to take to complete a sculpture. . .until it's done. haha!
The names Persia and Bidjar were conceived at the same time as the original idea. Persia is the European name for the country of Iran. A place of great wildness and beauty. Sadly plagued by war and civil unrest for generation after generation, the native people of Iran continue to produce the finest oriental rugs in the world. They are beautiful jewels of art in a harsh and unforgiving place. Bidjar is the city in Iran that produces my favorite type of rugs, reknown for their delicate patterns coupled with unparalleled toughness.
