The SS One "Alpine" Controversy

I had started this new page to carry forward the discussion about what is and is not an Alpine.  All material moved to SS Jaguar page 5 and combined with Original SS Alpine Tourer on 06 Feb 04.   rev.gif (06 Feb 04)

1936 SS One DHC DPA 342

new.gif (24 Jan 04)

Information is sought about 1936 SS One Drop Head Coupé, registration number DPA 342.  It was represented to me as a "Standard SS100", whereas the firm was SS Cars, Ltd. by then and that's no SS100.  It seems to me to be a stock SS One Drop Head Coupé with some doo-dads added - what appears to be a Pilot Beam steerable headlamp, two external horns (hooters), a windscreen sun vizor, and a high driver's-side rear-view mirror.

Let's look at the car, first:

Also, here is a detail of the driver's door with the wife of the 1954 owner about to enter (London, 1954):

Note the gap where a bombed-out building stood opposite.

In 1953-54, my correspondent's father owned this car for all of three months and now wonders what has happened to it.  He believed it to be a 2½-litre 1936 Standard SS100 and remembers it being one of only around 10, this particular one having been previously owned by the director of the DeHavilland aircraft company, based in Hatfield, England, and thinks this was car number 8.

He bought the car around 1953/1954, paying about £250 from a car dealer in Southgate Road, London N1, England.  The family would be grateful if we could confirm the make/model and provide any more details about it, or its current whereabouts (assuming it survives and is in a museum or a private collection).

One nice fallout of the DHC matter is that I received this smashing photo of an SS One Tourer in the Netherlands ca. 1950s:

Another nice fallout of the DHC matter is that I received these smashing publicity photos of an SS One DHC; the first shows it with the head (top) raised, the second the off-side door open, with passenger seat details, and the third how the head folds in a semi-disappearing mode under a lid on the top of the boot (trunk):

I can't for the life of me see how the cantrails break at the rear with that elegant curve (they folded inward on my "Mark IV", but the window openings were rectangular on that series).  Note also the straight pleating of the seat squabs (non-sunburst pattern) and the unpleated door facing.  I also love the delicate tracery of the landau irons, much like those that graced my 3.5L "IV" DHC and so very unlike the bloated mockeries on the Mark V DHCs.  Note how the t(i)(y)res have "DUNLOP FORT" highlighted and that monster racing-style filler cap.

Tom Zwakman's Cars

A Dutch gentleman named Tom Zwakman runs an outstranding SS and Jaguar (and Aston-Martin) restoration shop in Alkmaar, Holland, Zwakman Motors Europe; as part of this operation, he buys and sells outstanding SS and Jaguar cars, which he lists and pictures.  It occurred to me that, as they get sold off, the pictures disappear, so I am, with Tom's kind permission, posting them here for "permanent' record.   new.gif (04 Feb 04)

Tom also has his own personal collection, and a lot of magnificent vehicles pass through his hands (or, at the very least, in front of his lens); here, for example, is one of the most impressive shots of a "Mark IV" saloon I have ever seen:   new.gif (12 Feb 04)

I will try to keep them in roughly ascending date order; some are guesses because they were gone before I logged their details.  So, Tom Zwakman's Cars, presenting them with Tom's text (edited only slightly for form) -

1933 SS1 TOURER - a rare one-off, the only 1933 SS1 20HP tourer; all other 1933 cars were 16HP ones:

(photo courtesy of T. Zwakman - all rights reserved.)

There were two other SS1 tourers shown; 1934 JAGUAR SS1 TOURER 20 HP, CHASSIS NO: 248178, MILEAGE : 41813, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: BLACK, INTERIOR: RED, HOOD COLOUR: BLACK [FITTED WITH 2.5L OHV ENGINE], PRICE : € 150.000,00 and 1935 JAGUAR SS1 TOURER 20HP, CHASSIS NO: 248603, MILEAGE: 34365, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: BLACK, INTERIOR: BROWN, HOOD COLOUR: BLACK, PRICE : € 225.000,00:   rev.gif (12 Feb 04)

34 SS1 Tourer 35 SS1 Tourer

Similarly, there were two Airline saloons; 1935 JAGUAR SS1 AIRLINE 20 HP, CHASSIS NO: 249371, MILEAGE: 64561, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: OLD ENGLISH WHITE, INTERIOR: BROWN, VERY ORIGINAL CAR, PRICE : € 160.000 (THIS CAR CAN BE DELIVERED TOTALLY RESTORED AS WELL):

35 SS Airline Saloon SS Airline Saloon

Now, here is one of the rarest and most exciting cars of all - 1935 JAGUAR SS90, CHASSIS NO: 249476, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR {originally}: BRITISH RACING GREEN, INTERIOR: SUEDE GREEN, HOOD COLOUR: BLACK, HISTORY : FIRST PRODUCTION CAR, EX-WORKS AVC477, MOST IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE SS90 OF ALL [THIS PHOTO IS AS WE BOUGHT THE CAR, WE ARE NOW BUSY TO BRING IT BACK TO THE TOTAL ORIGINAL COLOURS AND CONDITION AS IT LEFT THE FACTORY ON THE 25TH MARCH 1937 AND THE RESTORATION WOULD BE FINISHED MID 2004], PRICE : € 600.000; but, not only does Tom have this car, he had another:

SS90 SS

Tom has had several SS-100 cars (naturally), at this writing he has 1937 JAGUAR SS100 2.5 L, CHASSIS NO: 18122, MILEAGE: 24408, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: OLD ENGLISH WHITE, INTERIOR: DARK BLUE, HOOD COLOUR: DARK BLUE, HISTORY: A1 RESTORATION AND IN NEED OF NOTHING AT ALL AND READY TO DO EVERY EVENT YOU WISH, PRICE: € 325.000,00 and 1937 JAGUAR SS100 2.5 L, CHASSIS NO: 18122, MILEAGE: 24408, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: OLD ENGLISH WHITE, INTERIOR: DARK BLUE, HOOD COLOUR: DARK BLUE, HISTORY: A1 RESTORATION AND IN NEED OF NOTHING AT ALL AND READY TO DO EVERY EVENT YOU WISH, PRICE: € 325.000,00:

SS100 Red SS100 White

plus he had two others:

SS100 Maroon SS100 Silver

Next, we turn to a very-imposing but unprovenanced SS tourer that appears to me to be about a 1936 or 37 SS Jaguar and a 1937 SS 1.5 L SALOON, CHASSIS NO: 22064, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: BLACK, INTERIOR: BROWN, CONDITION: ORIGINAL AND GOOD, PRICE : € 30.000,00:

SS SS Jaguar 1d=frac12;L Saloon
{I would assume that this car would be an SSII - no?}

The next car is one I actually had the privilege and pleasure of driving (ca. Apr 1961), which I have covered in some detail on my SS Jags page 2 and for which the original U.S. advert appears on my SS Jags page 1, the 1937 (registered in 1938) JAGUAR SS100 FHC, CHASSIS NO: 39088, STEERING: RHD, BODY COLOUR: SILVER GREY, INTERIOR: RED, VERY GOOD CONDITION, HISTORY: THE ONLY SS100 FHC EVER BUILT AND INTRODUCED AT EARL'S COURT LONDON 1938 {PRICE: € 800.000}:

37/38 SS100 FHC 37/38 SS100 FHC
PICTURE 2, REMARKABLE BODY LINES LIKE THE BUGATTIS

Tom did not restore the SS100 Fixed Head Coupé; he bought it in this condition; David Barber from the U.K did the last work on the car.

Another shot of the FHC (which ever-so-clearly shows the origin of the later saloon and FHC "tumble-home") and then a remarkable roadster, a real gem, the incredible, one-off, 1937/38 BABY JAG!  THIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY SIR WILLIAM LYONS BABY JAGUAR:

37/38 SS100 FHC 38/39 Baby Jag

THE CAR WAS BUILT FOR SIR WILLIAM PERSONALLY, HOWEVER IT WAS A PRESENT FOR HIS WIFE; HIS SON MAINLY USED THE CAR.  TODAY THE BABY REMAINS STILL IN VERY ORIGINAL CONDITION AND IS STILL IN GOOD RUNNING ORDER.  THE NAME "BABY JAG" WAS GIVEN AS IT WAS THE SMALLEST JAGUAR EVER BUILT (EVEN UP TILL TODAY) {PRICE ON REQUEST}:

38/39 Baby Jag 2 38/39 Baby Jag 3
(all photos courtesy of T. Zwakman - all rights reserved.)
[Thumbnail images - click on photos for larger images]

The Baby Jag was built on a Standard Flying Twelve chassis and carries a 1.5L SS overhead valve engine; the Baby Jag was first registered in 1939.

It came as no surprise to learn that Tom Zwakman had snapped up 1935 SS1 Alpine Sports Tourer WS 5777, noted at the top of the page and detailed on SS Jags page 1.   new.gif (04 Feb 04)

Custom Classic Cat!

Now, here's a car to delight any classic sports car lover and an opportunity to have a lot of fun without investing in a museum car.  First, though, let me be perfectly clear - this is NOT an original SS One car, but neither is it a replicar; it is a customized synthesis of appropriate SS and Standard parts.  As I understand it, a 1934 SS One Airline Saloon, chassis number 248943, was severely damaged during World War II and was used as the basis for an "SS 90" (NOT SS 100) type of sports car.  Inasmuch as the work was done in 1969 or 1979, it is over 25 years old and so can be considered a "classic car", if a "one-off', in its own right.  The chassis was cut and spliced, a door-less roadster body fabricated, and everything assembled meticulously with lots of TLC; the resultant car speaks for itself:   new.gif (20 May 06) and rev.gif (19 Jul 06)

There is so much more about this fun car that I have created a special page for it and moved the balance of the coverage there, as well as adding far more:
