YET EVEN MORE APOCRYPHAL MISCELLANY
SOME CLIMAX (Anti-Climax?)! I was asked what I would
really like for a present and I, already having a Shay and a Heisler,
immediately replied, "A Climax, please." Apparently I wasn't
quite specific enough, taking it for granted that it would be in HO
(or even Z) and a geared logging engine; instead, this is what I got:

It's a "CLIMB AXE"! Now, it did come mounted on a
through-well flat and a drop-center flat, and I'm really into
heavy-load cars, and I know I shouldn't look
a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm not INTO Garden Scale (nor
mountain climbing, either, for that matter)! I could
brain the donor with the axe, of course, but let's show a little
gratitude around here!
LIRR Cabin Car 12 - OOPS! Seems there was a little
misunderstanding over at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum when the volunteer woodworkers were asked
to repair vandalism to LIRR cabin car #12!

I "logged" on and that's a cabin car, all right!
"Cabin Car" is a PRR term; it
may well have originated with the Pennsy. Almost everyone
associated in any way with railroads knows it means "Caboose":

I "horned" in and that's a caboose, all right! That's some hood
ornament - looks like the Dodge "rammed" it!

One horse(power) doesn't sound like much but it's a very-slow-speed
crawler and served the South Negros Sugar Company well as their Number
One (my, wouldn't North Negros Sugar have been surprised!).
For Christmas 2007, I asked Santa to bring me an HO Baldwin
Centipede but the poor, old, overworked guy misunderstood, with
this rather strange result:

Since I still run brass rail, electrical contact to the wheels is
really great, but pitting is a major problem.
Meyer 0-4-4-0T Locos - Reading Ron Ziel's "Steam Beneath the
Red Star", I ran across a number of "cute" little Meyer 0-4-4-0T
locos, which set me looking in the BW files; here's an Ira Ersatz job
he ran off for the
Ruhnian State Railways, the RSR Class 323-2A 4-Cylinder Shunting
Locomotive, based on the Class 323A 2-Cylinder Shunting Locomotive
designed by Bela Šahlmeti and built by Stephenson in 1920:

The Saxon Railways had a smaller 0-4-4-0T which passed along to the
Deutsches Reichsbahn and the Deutsches Bundesbahn as their Class 98 0
(page 74 in Zeil):
98 001 (left and two center photos) survives.
The RSR liked that design and Frihdrik Tešlov had Ira make up a
similar unit based on Karel Belčamin's old 1904 C-9 0-6-0T:

The Class C9-2 worked well enough but was not placed in production.
However, the Pennsy heard of it from George Ersatz and commissioned
the BW to make a bigger Class AAM5 Meyer unit from the same A5 and C1
components as the famed Class ASS:

Although the unit was quite successful, Pennsy Maintenance rejected it
because of the inherent difficulty in cylinder repair.
When Fairbanks-Morse heard of the rejection of #1918, they prevailed
upon George Ersatz to have Ira rework it into an experimental
OPPOSED-PISTON steamer, PRR Class AAOP5:

If you thought the AAM5 was a maintenance nightmare, you should have
seen the fits the Penssy went through just trying to get the rebuilt
loco, with its rigid wheelbase and monster cylinders, through its
trials - fuhgedaboudit! She was quickly consigned to scrap, with
Ira blaming F-M and F-M blaming Ira.
As soon as the Oscar Mayer Weiner PR people heard of the demise of the
AAM5, completely misunderstanding the significance of the Meyer design,
as well as totally overlooking the different spelling of the name,
they quickly contacted PRR Surplus Assets and acquired the chassis,
with this staggering result:

[Just so's ya know, Meyer was Jean Jacques Meyer
(1804-1877), a Frenchman who took out a patent on the design of
double-bogeyed articulated locos in 1861, and Oscar Ferdinand
Mayer (1859-1955) was a German immigrant who started out,
with his brother, Gottfried, selling würsts in the German neighborhood
of Chicago in 1883 (this was their worst würst).]
The RSR'as 37,500 litre Type T266-10r Tank Wagon designed by Artur
Gorote and built in 1981 by the RSR Works in Bevice-Akohniçe, Ruhnia,
was nowhere near adequate enough for the huge surge in popularity of
the "Chelmôrskya" brand of all-day suckers from the AMŠUNT works in
Kalmorska. In order to meet the increased demand for sweetener
for the new candy, Piotr Furahtine, the RSR's new Chief Engineer,
asked the BW to help and Ira Jr. responded with a design for Europe's
biggest tanker, the 190,000 litre Type T900-10r, which was eagerly
accepted:

The car is far too big for Ruhnia's branch lines but the
Bevice-Akohniçe works, which fabricated the monster under Furahtine's
direction, and both AMŠUNT's Kalmorska candy factory and the nearest
river port, Schmininiçik, where sweetener is unloaded, are all on the
RSR main, where clearance is adequate (barely).
