Before I start, I should note that all this started with a secret project that is still unfinished and the next major development of the Berlinerwerke was their fabled DDP45:

DDP45

YET EVEN MORE APOCRYPHAL MISCELLANY

On the main BW APOCRYPHA page, I suggested that you might also enjoy Andrea Luigi Meneghini's fantastic Da Vinci Rails site; here is my (rough) version of his BR 53, the BR 35.3:   new.gif (19 May 07; moved here from page 15 on 21 May 07)

BR35.3
(18 May 07 Drawing by SB,III after Andrea Luigi Meneghini's Da Vinci Rails - all rights reserved {but to whom?},
based on Andrea's German BR 53)

How could I resist?

Andrea also has the UP Tiny Boy, a 4-8-2, which didn't really "do" me, so here instead is my equally rough version, the UP Little Boy, a 4-4-4-2:   new.gif (21 May 07)

LittleBoy

  rev.gif (08 Jun 07)

Once again, how could I resist?  [The revision was to add a stack - nobody noticed it was missing! - hee, hee, III]

Even the UP Little Boy 4-4-4-2, nice as it is, didn't really "do" me, so I searched really hard and found the UP Tiniest Boy, a 2-2-2-2:   new.gif (08 Jun 07)

Do NOT even ask how the cranks could operate on such tight spacing!

Well, when e-buddy Russ saw the Little Boy, he shot back about a Cab Forward, in which I have no interest, but then he explained that what he had in mind was the old Kemtron conversion (gotta find my old catalog) for the 0-4-0T docksider.  Ah, yes; I remember it well!  It was a brass casting designed to fit the Varney and Mantua Docksiders.  Well that DID appeal and I fished around in the voluminous (and ever-expanding) BW files and, sure enough, there was such, the BR 35.3FV (Fhrerstand Vorwrts or Drivercab Forward):   new.gif (19 May 07; moved here from page 15 on 21 May 07)

BR35.3FV
(25 May 07 Drawing by SB,III after Andrea Luigi Meneghini's Da Vinci Rails - all rights reserved {but to whom?},
again based on Andrea's German BR 53)

And yet again, how could I resist?  In fact, I really like this one!  She's oil fired, of course, and has a huge oil tank in the coal bunker, plus oil and water hoses and the requisite double drawbars.

Ruhnian State Railways Class 164b 6-Cylinder Compound Beyer-Garratt Express Passenger Locomotive, designed by Jochann Ketterik and built in 1963 by Beyer Peacock & Co., Manchester, England, as the RSR's Class 164a Express Goods (Freight) 4-10-2+2-10-4 locomotive.  The performance of that loco, with poppet valves and twenty driving wheels, on the "Back Door Route" between Tormu and Forihv was so outstanding that a passenger version was commissioned a few years later.  Ira Ersatz came out of semi-retirement to assist Ketterik.  In order to assure sufficient steam for high-speed running over the Gelodre summit at a minimum of 130 kmh, the 164a smokebox and ashpan were extended rearward and the inner pony trucks changed from two wheel to four-wheel to bear the added weight and provide better tracking at speed, making the Whyte classification 4-10-4+4-10-4:   new.gif (04 Jun 07)

RSR-BW 164b

[Click on thumbnailed image for larger picture]

This was certainly the biggest Garratt to date.

The performance of the RSR Class 164b, while more than satisfactory, still left a lot to be desired as to top speed (130 kmh).  Accordingly, in further collaboration between the Ruhnian State Railways's Jochann Kettterik and ex-BW Ira Ersatz, the running gear of the RSR's famed Class 364a 6-Cylinder Doherty 4-6-2 Compound Express Passenger Locomotive was extended by one extra driver and fitted under each engine of the Class 164b and, with extra courses fitted to the boiler and a longer firebox and ashpan, resulted in the RSR's massive Class 815a Doherty 10-Cylinder Superheated Triple-Exansion Compound 4-8-4+4-8-4 Express Passenger Locomotive:   new.gif (05 Jun 07) and   rev.gif (06 Jun 07)

RSR-BW 815a
(05/06 Jun 07 image by and © 2007 S. Berliner, III after B. Clubb/RSR - all rights reserved)
[Click on thumbnailed image for larger picture]

The larger diameter drivers, tandem cylindering, poppet valving, and greater steaming ability allowed the 815a to routinely maintain a top speed of 160 kmh under load, whil(e)(st) routinely maintaining the ease of routine maintenance expected (and routinely obtained) during routine maintenance by RSR routine maintenance crews.   rev.gif (06 Jun 07)

AT&SF #8668 2-4-6-8-10 Malllettt Articklllated Locolocomotive with Dual-Double Ball-Jernted Berler - the AT&SF, which should have known better after the fiascos of its bellows and double-ball jointed flexible boilers on 2-6-6-2 #1159 and #1158 and their ilk, had the BW and the Ersatzs build this exceedingly-flexible monstrosity:   new.gif (24 Aug 07)

AT&SF #8668 Ball-Jernt

We shall not discuss the outcome of extensive testing of this nightmare (nor George or Ira's proof reading after a Brooklyn (Bronx?) draftsman lettered the photo).

Well before the Santa F realized just how bad the flexible boiler concept really was, they were considering buying up and standard gauging the Colorado narrow gauge lines.  However, in order to do so and still achieve enough power to haul economical trains on the wildy-curving roadbeds, they called in George Ersatz of the BW, who proposed a novel 2-2-2-2 double-ball jointed compound articulated loco.  The Santa F bought into the idea and Ira Ersatz, again utilizing his novel single driver side rods hung on the INSIDE of the crosshead, produced this little gem in the BW shops, AT&SF #88:   new.gif (25 Aug 07)

AT&SF #88 Micro Ball-Joint
(25 Aug 07 image by and © 2007 S. Berliner, III - all rights reserved)

Concerned that there still wouldn't be enough tractive effort, the Santa F elected to try a Micro-Triplex 2-2-2-2-2 with an extended firebox, their #99:

As you well know, the Santa F DID buy the lines but broad gauging never proceeded and these engines were never put through their paces.

It seems that the New Haven wanted to circumvent the 44-ton rule even far more than the unions could accept; they had the BW come up with a GE 44-ton switcher that included a cabin for a conductor and Lionel even made an O-scale model of it:   new.gif (07 Sep 07)

How the UTU and the Brotherhood howled!

I picked up a loco at Willis Hobbies and old buddy Stu Aaron asked me about the One-Hoss Shay; I thought it sounded awfully familiar (other than Oliver Wendell Holmes's fabulous poem, The Deacon's Masterpiece or The Wonderful "One-Hoss Shay"), so I hot-footed it home to check the BW files and, sure enough, there it was, an Ira Ersatz design from World War I when coal and oil were getting scarce:   new.gif (12 Sep 07)

Water and grain is run from the cistern and tender up to feeding troughs at the head end of the treadmill stall.  A chain drive runs a right-angle gearbox which then drives a vertical shaft carrying power down to an offset Hypoid gearbox which operates the main shafts.  Note that there is a discreet hose to capture gaseous effluent to run the generator turbine and blow the whistle (to alert the ASPCA?).  Note also the small hopper behind the driver's position; that holds carrots and sugar to reward the horse for a job well done.

Oh, old Ephraim Shay would have been quietly proud (as would Rube Goldberg)!

As always, you know you can count on the BW to find totally-unbelievable info.

More tales follow on the Berlinerwerke Apocrypha Continuation Page 17.

[See also the HO (1:87.1) Berlinerwerke saga or the Z (1:220) Berlinerwerke-Z saga.]

I always wondered at the incredibly tight security at the Berlinerwerke during WWII; now it can be told!  See, for starters, the wild site of Sig Case, Rails to the Stars - Steam in Space, files from the National Aeronautics and Steam Administration and the tie-in to the Berlinerwerke V1 on Apocrypha Page 2.

If you like this sort of nonsense, take a gander at Jim Wells' incredible
and at the AW NUTS Magazine site, "A Publication of the A.W. N.U.T.S. Garden Railway Society".

If you are air-minded (take that as you choose), you must see the Lion Air site!  I'd be Lion if I didn't warn you to keep your tongue in your cheek on this one!

Take your tongue out of your cheek and visit D. Dickens' The Patiala State Monorail Tramway site; whooie (and it's for real)!
