Before I start, I should note that all this started with a secret project that is still unfinished and the next major development of the Berlinerwerke was their fabled DDP45:

APOCRYPHAL MISCELLANY

new.gif (10 Feb 06)

Ira Ersatz had spells when things didn't go well for him at all; it made life very difficult for his brother, George, indeed.  One time, when George was away on an extended trip, the Pennsy asked if the BW (Berlinerwerke) could whip up a quick, inexpensive six-coupled grasshopper pusher to move those big leased Santa Fé locos at Renovo Yard.  Imagine George's dismay to return and find this monstrosity at work: new.gif (10 Feb 06)

You never knew with Ira!

When the PRR/LIRR/WIRR Z6s 4-2-2, and another obscure little loco we haven't located yet, were on their last legs, the Pennsy asked the BW about some really small, high-speed diesels to replace them, to pull the Piker and Oscar and the 007 hack and similar diminutive cars.  Ira got right on it and, with some help from ALCo, the BW quickly turned out two 150HP V-2 cowl units, the famed FA-0.1 and PA-0.1:   new.gif (11 Feb 06)

There MUST be a limit to how much of this they can stand!]

You haven't lived 'til you've heard a 2-cylinder 244 burbling away (and seen one smoking it up)!  I understand that these were later upgraded to turbocharged 200HP V-2 251s and may still be in service somewhere.

Well, it didn't take long for the Pennsy to overload these little gems and they were rather embarrassed; it would have made more sense to just get an FA-2 and a PA-2 but they'd already invested in the silly FA-0.1 and PA-0.1, so they asked George to consult with Ira and suggest a way out.  The obvious answer was an FB-0.1 and a PB-0.1:   new.gif (16/17 Feb 06)

Paired up, the FA-0.1 and FB-0.1 and the PA-0.1 and PB-0.1 worked out just fine:

As far as is known, these magnificent little lokeys are still puttering away.

With the success of the FA/FB-0.1 and the PA/PB-0.1, the LIRR wondered if the same idea wouldn't work just as well with a variant on their Fairbanks-Morse opposed-piston CPA-20-5 and CPA-24-5 dual power C-Liners.  George was called in to Morris Park and posed the question and he ran it by Ira with the the now-famed CPA2.4-5 and CPB2.4-5 being the answer:   new.gif (17 Feb 06)

The Long Island, however, never ran either unit alone, buying and operating them in matched pairs, the CPAB-2.4-5:

Next thing you knew, along came the New Haven with the same idea, this time about their FL-9 dual powered diesels.  Ira came up with these FL-0.9A and B units:   new.gif (17 Feb 06)

The NH, also, bought and operated the FL-0.9s in matched pairs, the FL-0.9AB:

Ira was dependable in one way, at least; he never failed to come up with imaginative solutions to odd problems.

One of the very first really large Ersatz locos was a conversion back in the late-'20s of a giant ALCo-GE Milwaukee Road class EF-5 semi-permanently-coupled, four-unit boxcab electric [(2-B+B)+(B+B)+(B+B)+(B+B-2)] from a straight electric to a dual-powered locomotive by the simple expedient of having GE rearrange the electricals to make room for two Ingersoll-Rand 300HP oil engines (diesels - right out of the early ALCo-GE-IR 100-ton boxcabs.  The huge electric body shells had more than enough room for this arrangement and GE provided generators that produced the same 3,000 volts DC that the pans drew from the pioneering overhead catenary.  GE also provided automatic switching gear so that the fireman could simply throw a switch to change over from pans to diesel.  Standard ALCo-IR air starting gear kicked over the engines.  Two I-Rs in each of four units gave a 2,400HP rating (as contrasted with the 13,760HP under maximum catenary power and the speed under diesel power was basically little more than a crawl.  The earliest AGEIR units were already capable of being fitted for MU operation.  The experimental four-unit loco was designated class OF-5 (Oil-Electric / Freight):   new.gif (18 Feb 06)

Although the loco could start heavy trains and move them at drag speed under diesel power, the disparity between performance under wire and by diesel was simply too great to be worth reproducing the loco.  As soon as 375HP I-R engines became available in 1928, they were substituted (3,000HP total), followed by 400HP and then 450HP I-R engines in 1931 and (3,200 and 3,600HP total), but the incremental increases, however staggering per engine, were nowhere near adequate for full road service and the project was dropped before 900HP I-R engines came out in 1936 (not that even they would have been near enough at "only" 7,200HP total).

ALCo was requested to come up with a fully-waterproof RS-1 road switcher that could run safely in flooded areas.  GE's charges to develop fully-waterproof traction motors was more than ALCo or the customer were willing to bear and they called in George Ersatz, who was, quite frankly, stumped.  Then he remembered ALCo's interest in the diesel-pneumatic (compressed air) drive system, but how to fit that into a diesel chassis?  Leave it to Ira!  He grafted a big Heisler engine into the RS-1 where the electrical generator had been, ripped out the steam generator and used the small hood for a huge compressor, driven by a shaft running under the center-line of the cab directly from the diesel engine, piped the air to the Heisler cylinders under the seat boxes, and put stock heavy Heisler gearboxes on the inner axles and side rods outboard of the truck frames.  By using waterproof grease on all moving components below the level of the walkways, he thus gave the client an RS-1 that could easily and safely ford several feet of water:   new.gif (19 Feb 06)

This odd contrivance worked well enough but the economy of the weird propulsion system was no better than the Russian Lomonosoff loco or the German V-32-001 and it was eventually converted back (with quite some difficulty) to a stock RS-1.

I always wondered at the incredibly tight security at the Berlinerwerke during WWII; now it can be told!  See, for starters, the wild site of Sig Case, Rails to the Stars - Steam in Space, files from the National Aeronautics and Steam Administration and the tie-in to the Berlinerwerke V1 on Apocrypha Page 2.
