3D COMIC BOOK TOY SOLDIERS"KINGS' KNIGHTS"
ONE OF THE EARLIEST 3D COMIC BOOK PLAYSETS
The "Kings' Knights" Comic Book Playset has an interesting history. It is the only known Set that seems to have been offered first in a 3D version in the mid 1950's but by the early 1960's was changed to a Flats version.
The early 3D version, as seen in the Ad above, offered a Set of "Kings' Knights" with interchangeable Accessories. The Ad was found in a 1955 "Star Spangled War Stories" Comic Book By National Comics. It features what clearly seems to be an early 3D LIDO brand "Kings' Knights" Playset. The Ad illustration even shows the exact same box art and figures that were evidently used for the LIDO Playset at the time.
We have not yet found the official Comic Book 3D Set, so if anyone has actually seen it please get in touch. The reference images above show what the standard 3D LIDO Kings' Knights Set (and some loose LIDO Knights) looked like. Note the Box Art and figures appear to be identical to what is shown in the 1955 Comic Ad. But that does not necessarily mean that the Comic Set looked exactly like this.
The later versions of the Kings' Knights Comic Book Sets offered Black & White colored Flats called "104 Kings' Knights" which came in a cardboard "Treasure Chest" Box. At first, the Comic Ad art did not change much for the Flats Set - it still showed the same LIDO 3D illustration. But the Flats Ad did explain that the figures now consisted of "Black Knights & White Knights" which was at least a clue that the LIDO 3D multi-color Knights were no longer in the Kings Knights Set. Later on, the Flats Ads added a small illustration of the Flats but still kept the main LIDO Jousting Scene the same.
To view the Flats version of the Kings' Knights Set and Comic Ad, please follow the Kings' Knights link on the main CLASSIC COMIC BOOK FLATS Page of this web site.
It is not known when the Kings' Knights conversion from 3D to Flats occurred but it had definitely happened by 1962 because this web site has found a 1962 ALARMING ADVENTURES Comic book with an Ad for the Flats version of King's Knights Set.
