COMIC BOOK FLATS"132 Pc. ROMAN SOLDIERS SET" !
The famous "Imaginary Battle Scene" in the Romans Comic Ad above was created by renowned Comic Book artist Russ Heath (we believe it was made somewhere in the early 1960's.) We spoke to Russ about it and he said he'd been paid only 50 dollars to do the ad; but he wished he'd been paid for every time they reprinted it! It must be one of the most widely seen and best known comic images of the 1960's/70's. This set came in blue and yellow and each army shared identical molds. In the Photo Images above, notice that the sets are often found these days with several broken figures missing weapons, limbs, stands, etc.. These are actually quite handy to use as battlefield casualties. In the image below, each figure originally included with this set is shown (along with an insert showing the original Box the Romans came in.) Notice the detail in the sculpting. Despite being flats, each figure has a distinctive and realistic left side and right side. Top Row: General (Mounted), Cavalryman (With Spear & Armor.) Second Row: Cavalryman (with Banner), Spearman (with Shield.) Third Row: Slinger, Archer (with Bow.) Fourth Row: Bugler, Foot Soldier (with Broadsword and Shield.) Bottom Row: Chariot with Driver. Black & White Photo Insert: This image with text was found in a defunct hobby magazine called Plastic Figure & Playset Collector. It shows the Roman Catapult with two figures from the later Soft Plastic version of the Romans Set. Original early versions were all hard plastic. Not Shown: "Catapult Ammunition" which was actually tiny plastic balls ("Stones") which could be put into the Catapult and hurled at the enemy with the flick of a finger!
