Advanced Search Help

How To Use Advanced Search
Advanced search is for very specific searches. There are two steps to follow when doing an advanced search. For step one you will need to choose a category to search. For step two you will need to choose a search method and fill in the required information for that search method.

General Tips

  • Enter your search terms in lower case. The search engine will find both upper and lower case instances of your search term:
  • dinosaur

  • Search for phrases by entering the words separated by spaces
  • modern art

  • Use double quotes to search for an exact phrase:
  • "museum of natural history"
    "museum of modern art"

  • Exclude pages that are not relevant to your search by preceding the search term with NOT:
  • museum NOT Paris

Help on choosing a category to search
To search all categories select the "All Categories" option.

To limit your search to a specific category indicate the category you wish to search by selecting the radio button to the left of the category (for example, "Arts & Entertainment").

The option of searching all of the category (for example, "e;All "Arts & Entertainment") is automatically selected when a category is chosen.

To further limit your search you can indicate the subcategory of the category you wish to search by using the drop down menu that is to the right of the category (for example,"Music").

Help on Method 1: Keyword search
You can choose how you would like search to treat the words typed into the search box.

Select All of the words (AND) to find pages that contain every word typed into the search box. For example, typing "cows milk" and selecting "All of the words (AND)" will find all of the pages that contain both the word "cows" AND the word "milk".

Select Any of the words (OR) to find pages that contain one or more of the words typed into the search box. For example, typing "cows milk" and selecting "Any of the words (OR)" will find all of the pages that contain either the word "cows" OR the word "milk".

Select This exact phrase to find pages that contain all of the words typed into the search box in the order in which they are typed into the search box. For example, typing "cows milk" and selecting "This exact phrase" will find all of the pages that contain the phrase "cows milk".

To further focus your search, put NOT in front of the terms that you want to exclude. For example, typing "cows not milk" and selecting "All of the words (AND)" will find all of the pages that contain the word "cows" that also fail to contain the word "milk".

Help on Method 2: Search for specific words appearing together in a sentence or paragraph
You can search for a word or phrase that appears together in a sentence or paragraph.

For example, to find pages that contain information on the topic of dairy farming you might want to search for pages that have a paragraph which contains the words "cow", "milk" and "dairy". In which case you would use Method 2 by first selecting "paragraphs" from the drop down menu. Next enter the word "cow" in box next to "Search Term 1", the word "milk" in the box next to "Search Term 2", and the word "dairy" in the box next to "Search Term 3". Next you could choose to display your results by Score or Date. Finally you would select the "Search" button.

Help on Method 3: Only Searching the Title or URL
You can limit your keyword search to the URL or Title of a web page. The URL is the text that is found in the "Address" field, "Location" field, "Go To" field, or "Netsite" field of your web browser. The Title of the page in the information that is displayed in the title bar (very top part) of your browser window.

For example, if you want to only find pages which are mostly about cows you might want to use Method 3 to do a keyword search the word "cows". First choose "Title" from the drop down menu. Next enter the word "cow" in the box next to "must contain". Next you could choose to display your results by Score or Date. Finally you would select the "Search" button.

Displaying Results By Score or Date

You can display the search results (listing of pages found) by relevancy score or date of publication.

Relevancy score is a score from 0% to 100% indicating the degree in which the web page content matches your search criteria (what you entered before selecting the search button).

Date of publication is the date in which the web page was posted on the web.
