History

The early history of the conference is described in the Preface of General Topology and Applications, (Susan Andima, Ralph Kopperman, Prabudh Misra, Jack Reichman and Aaron Todd, editors. Lecture Notes in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Volume 134, Marcel Dekker, Inc., NY, 1991).

"In recent years general topology has grown sufficiently to support a second major annual conference in the United States, as demonstrated by the success of the Summer Conference on General Topology and its Applications series. This series began at The City College of New York, CUNY in 1984 as the Independence Day Conference on Limits with 13 talks (9 contributed) and a little over 30 participants. It grew steadily to a 3-day conference with over 70 participants in 1988 when it was held at Wesleyan University as the Northeast Conference on General Topology and Applications. This conference was the first in the series that could truly be called major. It remained to be seen whether the conferences could continue to be strong with their return to New York, and this question was resolved by the 20% increase at the 1989 conference in attendance at The College of Staten Island. Its participants came from 11 different countries; 41 gave talks, of whom 6 were invited: Mel Henriksen, Neil Hindman, Karl H. Hofmann, Peter T. Johnstone, Ellen E. Reed and Mary Ellen Rudin. This success in its turn formed a strong basis for the success of the 1990 conference (now called the Summer Conference on General Topology and its Applications), which was held at the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University and had 117 particpants. A seventh in the series, to honor Mary Ellen Rudin and her work, is planned at Madison, Wisconsin, June 26-29, 1991. "A quick glance at the contents of these proceedings will inform the reader of the basic philosophy of our series of conferences; we stress not only general topology but its applications. In addition to papers in general topology and set theoretic topology, we find here papers with motivations from topological groups and semigroups, convergence structures, functional analysis, topological algebra, category theory, Lie group theory, topological dynamics, computer science and other disciplines. We hope these articles will give some further insight into the relationship between general topology and mathematics."

The format of the conferences has changed over the years. The early conferences lasted two days, with only one session of contributed talks, and four invited speakers. Proceedings were first added in 1987 (this was the only combined proceedings, covering the 1985 and 1987 conferences). In 1988 the conference was extended to three days, and in 1989 parallel sessions were begun. The conference assumed its present length of four days in 1991. Special sessions were first instituted in 1992, and workshop lectures in 1994. The abstracts and schedule of the conferences since 1995 are archived at Topology Atlas.
