This web site is devoted to the WEISENBURGERS of Neuburg am Rhein, Germany, and their descendants around the world. Some stayed in Neuburg. Some emigrated to South Russia in 1804. From there, some emigrated to the United States or Canada and some returned to Germany. Some emigrated directly to the United States in the mid-1800s.
A NOTE ON SPELLING... Over the years there have been several variations on the spelling of this surname, including: Weissenburger, Weißenburger and Weisenburger. Sometimes it may be seen as Weisenberger, but most in this line spell it with a 'u' rather than an 'e'. Most of the earlier records, including most of those in Russia, spell it with a double 's'. More recent spellings have only one 's'. Beware--spelling has not been standardized in these records and you will find variations. Be sure to check other spellings if you can't find who you are looking for.
THE MEANING OF THE WEISSENBURGER NAME The literal translation of our surname can be broken down as follows: "Weissen" means "white"; "Burg" means "castle"--in this sense, a castle built by a knight. (A castle built for royalty was called "Schloß".) A village would grow around each Burg, composed of people who worked in the castle or settled there for protection. People from the village of Weissenburg were called "Weissenburgers".
Hopefully this site will provide a means for Weisenburger/Weissenburger descendants to explore their roots and to connect with other cousins. Please look around at the various pages. Questions, comments, corrections and additions are ALWAYS welcome!
