Elisabeth Cook Sullivan

Ceramic Sculpture, Portrait Sculpture, Funcitonal Ceramics

I could never decide if I wanted to be an artist or a scientist, and I ended up merging the two. I think of my work as a marriage of Art and Math, using an understanding of space and dimension, form, structure, and proportion. My favorite works are figurative, so toss in some Anatomy as well! I am deeply drawn to the untamed – animals in the wild as well as people who are wild and free in some way. Humor and educational value are important to me--if my art teaches something about one of my subjects, or the viewer has a good chuckle at some of my sillier works, my day is made.

An artist since childhood, Elisabeth Cook Sullivan holds bachelors and masters degrees in theoretical mathematics. These studies contribute to her education as an artist as well as her education as a scientist, though she has also pursued education in the Arts, both formally and informally.

Elisabeth’s ceramic works have wheel-thrown and hand constructed elements. Her motifs are figurative, and recent focus has been on endangered and threatened species as well as other creatures living in the wild such as the Camargue horses from France. No bunnies and duckies for Elisabeth—her animals of choice are big cats, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and more! This year's focus has been on 3 dimensional wall hangings and animal teapots.

Elisabeth also creates three dimensional portrait sculptures in clay, fabric, and mixed media. See the portrait sculpture link below to see Elisabeth’s collection of celebrity, historical, political and other individuals you will likely recognize.

Elisabeth also makes works of political satire. These works are found in both her ceramics work and her portrait sculpture work. See samples of all her work at the following links:
