The George H. Thomas Home Page
Library of Congress
This web site is dedicated to the life
of Major
General George H. Thomas. He commanded the Army of the Cumberland
after the Battle of Chickamauga and he was one of the great generals of the American Civil
War. However today, for a
number of reasons, he is relatively unknown to the general public.
He was a
southerner and a career soldier who, at great personal loss, stood by the Old
Flag. He was a man of honor and courage in a
time of great turmoil. His story deserves to be known by future
generations of American children.
"There is nothing finer in
history than Thomas at Chickamauga."
- Henry M. Cist, The Army of the Cumberland
"It
is doubtful whether his heroism and skill exhibited last Sunday afternoon,
has ever been surpassed in the world."
-
Abraham Lincoln, about George H. Thomas at the Battle of Chickamauga
