I was researching a photo I have on a glass lantern slide of a young gentleman (in uniform). In seeing the photos on this website it is definitely a young George H. Thomas. In fact, looking a the autograph on the website, this photo appears to be "signed" by Geo. H. Thomas, himself! The photo also has the hand-written note "#97 So 8th St Brooklyn NY". Does anyone know the relevance of that street address? Was that where this picture was taken?

MGen Thomas served in a difficult time in US history. Especially the press of that era was harsh or vociferous, swinging widely and frequently without maturity or balanced thought. The treatment of Lincoln typifies the times. Grant actually praises Thomas highly in his personal memoirs, written as a terminal cancer patient years after Thomas passed. We may give thanks for the service of the best three generals who remained loyal to their oath...Grant/Sherman/Thomas. Fairly stated, the south had more competent generals overall-but Lee knew full well, as did Longstreet, that GRANT meant a new equation--especially established by penning Lee after three years of effusion in just over 40 days of hard fighting...

Have enjoyed looking through all the info you have on Gen'l George Henry Thomas. In researching my own Thomas family (from SC) there is apparently a connection to his Thomas family, but I've yet to discover what it is. Amongst my grandmother's photos is a picture of Gen'l Thomas. Given that my grandmother (b. 1884) Thomas grandfather was born about the same time as the General, I suspect he may be connected through a sibling of the General's father, however I can find little info on his father's family. If anyone can help on this Thomas line, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for recommending this new biography of GHT.  I found it to be an excellent book, especially (as you mentioned in your review) whenever there were pertinent quotes from actual letters that GHT had written.  That's a lotta' work for any author to do, but it helped to "humanize" the General. The maps were especially drawn clearly, and helped me to realize the strategy, and assorted troop movements ~ necessary to understanding why the battles went as they did. And the second copy of this book, purchased for a friend for Christmas, was a big hit, too!  Take care ~ Grace

My great-grandfather, Ezekiel Kohler Schwartz, 2nd Lt. 115th Illinois Vol. Infantry, was in Granger's Reserve Corps, called up at noon on Sept. 20th to support Gen'l Thomas. I have a typewritten copy of my GGF's diary, which confirms details. On Snodgrass Hill, the monument to the 115th Illinois, which fought gallantly, is next to the monument to Gen'l Thomas.

As a minor student of the Civil War, and at age 71, I do not believe that I will graduate into the most knowledgeable class of masters of this subject in American History.  What perked my new interest in Thomas was an article in Smithsonian Magazine recently on the newsstand.

It truly is amazing that he and his distinguished classmates were basically the center of who's who in the Civil War.  It really is a shame that Thomas' demeanor allowed the other generals in blue to run over his good reputation as an excellent military man and a man of great virtue.

I live in the Albany area and visited General Thomas' gravesite yesterday. I was amazed at what had been done. The whole area was cleaned up and the tree branches from the tree had been cleared away from the monument. That is my recent picture of the monument on the webpage and will try sending an updated one. In addition, I grew up in Ft. Thomas, KY, so my association with General Thomas goes back a few years. My mothers maiden name was Thomas, but I don't think there is any connection. I wish there were. He was a courageous and gallant man.

I stated recently that General Thomas won the Battle Of Franklin. This was wrong. The commander at that battle was Major-General John S. Schofield. I confused the fact that many soldiers from the Army Of The Cumberland were detailed to serve at Franklin with General Thomas commanding them. He was their "spiritual commander" but the victory belongs to Schofield. In no way does this diminish Thomas in my view since at Nashville he inflicted the biggest defeat on an enemy army on a battlefield than any other general in the ACW.

General Thomas was the only general in the ACW to destroy two enemy armies in consecutive battles, Franklin and Nashville. Despite their differences, Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman admired General Thomas' qualities. Sure he was and is "The Rock Of Chickamauga" but he was more than that. Like General James B. McPherson his full stature in the public memory needs to be understood. I see this site as a fine attempt to do just that. I wish you luck!

I really enjoyed visiting your website and reading the history of Gen. Thomas especially since I recently visited the Cumberland area. I visited Fort Donelson National Battlefield and Cemetery. My Uncle was buried there in 1977 but there are many, many graves from Civil War Days. The Battlefield has been maintained as much intact as it was the 1860's as possible. Thank you.

I deeply appreciate this site on Gen. Thomas, he is without a doubt, the Union's best General Officer of the Civil War.  Grant will always rank ahead of him because of where he fought. But Thomas will one day be valued above, Sherman, and Sheridan as he should be.  He was in my opinion the Union's best Strategist and Tactician i.e., Nashville and Atlanta, for example of his abilities.  I think if the Europeans had entered the War on the side of the South, Thomas's light would have been the brightest.  Bar None.

In 1956-7 my mother took me to an antique store in MT View, California. I saw a small locked gray case with wood strips on all 4 sides. It had the initials GHT on the side. There was no key. The shop owner told me there was a Civil War General's hat inside. I persuaded my mother to buy it for me. I pried it open, when I got home, it was a child's dream; a ceremonial hat; with ostrich plumes of red, white and blue, on top. It was a narrow black hat with fancy ribbonned, emblems on the sides. There was a portrait of a woman, decaled to the inside top of the box. There was also a compartment for epaulettes (which were not there). I remember looking up the initials in the library years later, and found it may have been G. H. Thomas's.

I called up Bernie Vogel this morning. He's the Administrator at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York, where Gen. Thomas is buried. We discussed the increased number of people who will now visit George's gravesite because of the Smithsonian article. The Board was already planning on doing some kind of restoration work to the marble grave marker; and said they have to be cautious, not to damage the marble finish. There's a very large pine tree to the left of the gravesite, which is why the grave marker has a lot of pinesap stains on it. Anybody planning to go to the Oakwood Cemetery should go to the office first, either to get directions, or to follow Bernie's car to the GHT site. There are hundreds of wooded acres, so you could get lost looking for the GHT site location.
But the effort is worth it..........

This (if I managed to type this web site information correctly) is a three page "Adobe" story of the 2006 restoration/re-alignment of our favorite "Circle" in Washington, D.C. There are also postcard prints from 1888, 1915, 2000, and an artist's rendering for 2006. This was big news to me.

I hope that they also restored - or replaced - the missing bronze medallion seal of the Army of the Cumberland, of an acorn inside a triangle or a star.......

I've been reading Francis McKinney's biography of Thomas and am fascinated to learn about the great General Thomas and how history was nearly rewritten by Grant supporters. It's been said that Grant was a man who looked like he was determined to ram his head through a brick wall. Thomas would have used a sledgehammer instead and preserved a lot of lives. Keep up the good work!

Which of the books that you recommend would detail his field tactics? The article claimed they were modern but didn't explain what he did. Great website. Have always had an interest in Gen. Thomas. My ancestor, Pvt George Coyner, was with the 89th Ohio Vol. who protected the General's back when he had to withdraw from the Chickamauga battle site, was captured and died at Andersonville. A notable sacrifice in light of Gen. Thomas' contribution to the winning of that dreadful war!

I am currently working on the genealogy of General George Thomas from Southampton Co VA. If there is anyone out there with information regarding this, please e-mail me.
I am going back to the earliest known Thomas ancestor, a William Thomas of Surry VA who died ca 1719. There are not alot of cousins etc related to General George Thomas;
a lot of folks claim kinship, but it's not so.

My grammar school on the North side of Chicago is named after Gen. Thomas.  It was opened in 1898. The school was closed in the 1980's and was converted into condos.  The entrance with the school name is still there.

I was principally responsible for having a memorial plaque placed at the General's gravesite at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, N.Y. I became so involved in writing the inscription for the plaque I inadvertently inserted a homonym: I used the word "lead" when I meant "led". No one else caught it either; whiteout just wouldn't work on a bronze plaque. At least when people wander by the gravesite they will know a bit more about Thomas than "...born in Southampton Co. Virginia, born-died, etc."

Congratulations on a fine site dedicated to my favorite Union commander. I am a collateral descendent of Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood, who studied under Thomas at West Point, served with him in the Second U.S. Cavalry Regiment on the Texas frontier, and was soundly defeated by Thomas at Nashville. I own the www.johnbellhood.org website. A story goes that after the war Hood called upon Thomas at Louisville, and respecting Hood's severely crippled physical condition, Thomas came downstairs and met with Hood, rather than have Hood climb the steps to his office. Although this seems a minor gesture, I believe it was indicative of George Thomas exalted personal character.

It is only through another book that I reveled in the history of this fine Union General.  I believe Thomas was a Virginian who, contrary to his familial ties and birthplace, chose to remain loyal to the Union.  He paid dearly for this choice in terms of his family's disinheritance.

I am a Coloradoan in Virginia and after a great deal of reading on The Army of the Ohio/Cumberland, and focusing on Gen. Thomas I've become a great admirer of his.  I am presently reading about the Battle of Perryville, where he wasn't as involved as he would have liked to have been, if I'm understanding Mr. Noe's book correctly, but greater things would come his way.
