A Photograph of Father Damien as a young priest hangs on an aged wall of St. Joseph's Church which he built in 1876.

Church on left:     St Philomena, located in Kalawao, was also built by father Damien in 1876 and enlarged to it's present size in 1888. The interior of the church looks much the same today as it did when it was originaly built, including the holes in the floor Father Damien cut by hand, so the lepers with lung problems could spit during services.

Center Kalaupapa:     Appearing peaceful and tranquil with its window to the North Shore, Kalawao was once a place of great pain and hardship, where those with leprosy were forced to swim to shore from ships that transported them there with only several days' food supply. Those that survived to reach the coast were greeted to a wasteland, void of shelters, food and doctors, it was a cruel and lawless time, where the strong preyed upon the weak and only the strongest survived.

Red roof Church:    Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church was built by Father Damien in 1874 in his efforts to convert the people of Molokai to Christianity. it was the first Catholic church on Molokai outside of the Kalaupapa settlement.

Fare Left:    Along the western shore of Molokai, this little cove is so typical of the many quiet and secluded beaches to visit, where a person can get away from it all.

Acknowledgments: My thanks to James H. Broker for his book, "A Portrait of Molokai ", Distributed by Molokai Fish and Dive Corporation, P. O. Box 576, Kaunakakai, Hawaii 96748, Phone; 808 676-5926

Print sizes are outside matboard measurements.
