Welcome! We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our territory goes along the Pacific Coast of Los Angeles County through Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

Mission Statement: The National Audubon Society's Mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. As part of this, our chapter's particular mission is to be a center for wildlife education, habitat protection, and conservation issues that involve birds.

All submitted articles, letters, drawings and photographs will be considered for publication in our print newsletter, the AUDUBON imprint, as well as our web site, in an effort to stimulate and encourage an active participation in the natural sciences, conservation and birding.

Alert to Residents of Santa Monica

SMBAS member Louise Steiner tells us that the City of Santa Monica's plan to cut down about 50 mature ficus trees and replace them with ginkgo saplings is meeting with a lot of citizen opposition. There is a website, http://www.treesavers.blogspot.com/ , where you can get information, sign a petition, or take other action to support the movement.

EVENING MEETING

Tuesday, May 13th, 7:30 p.m.

Important Note: This is the Second Tuesday of the Month

Ed Newcomer will present a program on “Operation High Roller”, a scandalous tale about the killers of Cooper’s Hawks. Senior Special Agent Ed Newcomer is currently assigned to the Los Angeles field office of the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement. As a special agent, Ed is responsible for investigating crimes involving federal wildlife laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Agent Newcomer is a licensed attorney who practiced law for just over ten years before becoming a special agent for the Service in 2002. Between 2006 and 2007, Ed conducted an undercover investigation involving the widespread and illegal killing of birds of prey in the Los Angeles area.

We meet at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th Street (between Colorado and Broadway), Santa Monica. Parking is under the building; metered spaces are free after 6:00 p.m., and there are numerous free Visitor Parking spaces on the lower levels. We meet on the first floor – the room number will be posted. Meetings begin at 7:30 sharp with a little business, and then our main presentation. Refreshments will be served.

This is our last evening meeting of the season. The next meeting will be in October.
