Starting an RP service bureau for architectural miniature models

Dear Manager,

Thank you for the valuable information in your website about RP processes and references.

I'm starting an RP business to create architectural miniature models, and I need more detailed information about the technical processes and material needed for the job. I need to know, for example, what prototyping devices to use, where to buy the little trees and cars, and what paints to use,...etc. I need a sort of "RP Miniature Models Techniques User Guide" to show me the steps needed to carry out the technical parts.

I would appreciate your input and look forward for your email.

There is probably no complete source of information that can answer your questions at the moment. There are still only a handful of companies making architectural models with RP. However, this is certainly a viable area and will become more so with time. I will give you several pointers, but other than that you'll have to dig out more on your own.

  1. Most companies in the field are using Z Corp.'s 3D printing technology. It offers pretty good resolution, but also color and labeling capabilities which are very important.

  2. The software conversion for arch models is not straightforward. Things like windows and small details can be problematic in creating a watertight description. A service bureau in the field, LGM, is however in the process of creating a SW package to help with this. They are in Colorado and can be found here: http://www.lgmmodel.com/

  1. See what you can learn from LGM and other companies in the field already. Look at the page on our site that collects those SB's. They might be willing to share info, or work out a royalty arrangement to get you going quicker. Also, see what you can learn from universities working in the filed. The Univ of Hong Kong comes to mind, but there are others. Use the SB directory on our site and the bibliography and university research sections to track down more info.

  2. The ancillary materials and methods, such as trees, paints, etc., should be covered in standard books and papers dedicated to the architectural modeling field. It may be difficult to find that stuff in your country, but a good starting point might be a trade organization such as the Association of Professional Model Makers http://www.modelmakers.org

They might have info on a society in your country or be able to point you to a sister org there. Also get in touch with the architectural trade organization in your country to find sources of books, libraries, etc., that would have what you need locally. Here, we would search local library resources on line, but it may be a different situation for you.
