Notes about 1950's Teen Magazines, information, articles.

Boomer's Fifties Teen Idol Magazine

I have received questions from students writing reports  on the subject of the 1950's, and the 1950's /1960's teen magazines.

In response, I have put together the following notes and comments about the fifties teen magazines. The following will lead you to information and materials; and direct you to (where to find) some of the following related topics on my sites ---- 1950's slang, 1950's magazine content, headlines, subjects of 1950's teen articles, fashion, magazine covers.
1.  ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE YOU WILL FIND SAMPLE HEADLINES
FROM TEEN MAGAZINES:

2.  FASHION:

(FASHION AND SLANG)

(FASHION & SLANG---"beatnik")

3.  SLANG: Here is an article about growing
up in the 50's and 60's as a teen.  Here you will find
slang words-- words that teens of the time used and also
were in the text of many teen magazines.

4.  THE SLANT OF MANY ARTICLES WAS : being good, how
someone was good, nice
--Girl next door , boy next door, clean images for the
teen idols were stressed. The articles were
mostly "fluff" --there might be a titillating headline
but it usually lead nowhere.

5.  SUBJECTS OF ARTICLES:
http://home.att.net/~boomers.fifties.teenmag/page27.html
(Bobby Rydell--" a good boy")
http://home.att.net/~movie.stars.1950/sandra_dee.html
(Sandra dee--"her good girl image")

6.  ANOTHER SUBJECT OF ARITCLES-a hint of scandal
but actually the article leads nowhere. Example of hint
of scandal article but doesn't deliver.

7.  MANY ARTICLES WERE FLUFF . Example of 2
fluff articles:

COMMENT (to do good):  The times were more innocent and the articles
had an innocent touch about them.  From today's standards
the articles seem like fluff, but those that were there
at the time experienced the happy, uplifting, "doing good"
atmosphere of the times which were reflected in the
magazines. In fact, John F Kennedy said: "It's not what
your Country can do for you but what you can do for your
Country"
--A very "do good" , "be good" statement.

(Roy Rogers to the rescue, to do good )

FUTHER REFERENCE FROM ANOTHER SOURCE: ebay.com
To get an idea of the looks of the 1950-60's-70's
magazine covers, you can check out http://ebay.com
(Just type in "ricky nelson", or other 50's/60's star and a
list of magazines should come up.)

My best 1960 teen magazine cover--
it's the best example of slang and articles / subjects of
that time--I don't think you will find any better
example on one single cover.

PS. The above are just some of the resources on this site.  New materials are added occasionally, so be sure to look for them.
