There was a brisk wind in the air from the northeast. Rain was in the area just a few hours before. Just the perfect weather for what else... A Motorcar ride.

North Central Railcars, LTD with the cooperation of the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad held its 2nd motorcar excursion for the year 2000. There were approximently 25 operators there with their motorcars.

A safety meeting is always held before every trip. Things like crossing hazards and other information pertainant to the trip are disscused. The host railroad often adds their advice too.

During the safety meeting, an interesting situation was brought to our attention. Our departure time was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Because the Wisconsin & Southern was running an excursion train of their own out of Whitewater that day, the departure time was delayed until the passenger train went past us. At 9:30 a.m. we were able to start our motorcar excursion.

"Scott, I better lead. You may need a tow later!"

Look who is towing who now!

Because we had to return before the passenger train's scheduled 4:00 p.m. return, there was a "no break down" rule in effect. What this means is in the event someone's car breaks down, it is either set off or towed. If time was not of concern, a short break may be taken to attempt to repair the effected motorcar. We didn't have the luxury of that this day. We use the "buddy" system during situations like this. The person in front of the broken down car "tows" it. Everyone at the meet has tow hitches installed on the front and rear of their car and a draw bar with them should this be necessary.

Set-off time back in Milton, WI
Back in Milton. A very nice trip!

As luck would have it, the passenger train was ahead of schedule. We had to switch off to a siding in order to let the train pass. We then finished our trip and made it back to Milton in time for dinner.

Thanks to Craig and all the people who helped make this day a very successfull event. As always, we look forward to the next North Central Railcars excursion.
