Meyers Orts- und Verkehrs-Lexikon des Deutschen Reichs by Raymond S. Wright III Commonly know as the Meyers Gazetteer, these books describe approximately 210,000 cities, towns, hamlets and dwelling places in the German Empire prior to World War One. Originally published in Leipzig, Germany in 1912-13, the Meyers Gazetteer has been reprinted in 2000 by Genealogical Publishing Company and can be ordered from Amazon.com in a 3 volume set (very expensive). It is also available on Microfiche from any Family History Center (most carry it on hand so you don't have to order it from Salt Lake City), and it can now be searched online at Ancestry (see link below). Please be aware that the Meyers Gazetteer is printed in the old German Gothic font which can be difficult to read.
