Since many passenger lists have not been indexed the book contains a helpful chapter on searching the unindexed years. Trade in Strangers: The Beginnings of Mass Migration to North America by Marianne S. Wokeck (published in 1999)
This book discusses the migration of Germans to the American Colonies (most notably Pennsylvania) in the 18th century. Also discussed is Irish Immigration to the Delaware Valley in the same time frame. You won't find your ancestor's name in this book or any passenger lists, but you will find information about the shipping business that brought people to the American Colonies at this time. Included is a detailed appendix that lists German Immigrant Voyages from 1683 to 1775. The author is an Associate Professor of History at Indiana University.
