Hi. Welcome to my ham radio web page.
My main activity is with NTS (National Traffic System), handling messages across the country.
My favorite mode is CW. 73 from WB0TAQ
callwin / callsrch
I have written two little callsign lookup programs. They use a small database that is right on your hard disk (or cd) so it's real fast and you don't have to be online to use it. I will provide weekly updates for your database, so you will only have to download the full database once.
callwin is the Windows version, and includes searches by name, city, state, zip.
callsrch is the dos version, which only looks up callsigns (no name search).
You get them both in the tools.zip package below.

Full Database
For a new installation, create a folder on your hard disk, eg C:\callwin
Then download callwin-all.zip and unzip it into that folder.
This file contains a recent complete database and the tools you will need to use and update it (callwin.exe, callwin.hlp, autoupdate.exe).
I suggest you create a shortcut to callwin.exe on your desktop. Click on 'callwin.exe' and you're off and running.
Note that you only have to download the full database once. After that, just use the weekly updates. They are much smaller files, so the download time is minimal.
Feel free to distribute it for as much as it cost you (ie, nothing).
Put it on CD for those who don't have web access, etc.
Or if you ask real nice, I will send you a CD.

Downloads
callwin-all.zip Complete install file contains 4/20/2008 database, callwin.exe, callwin.hlp and autoupdate.exe
autoupdate.zip Updated 3/14/07 autoupdate program does all the updating for you.
This is rev 0.4 which fixed the file corruption problem
callwin Updated 3/26/05 callwin.exe with Help menu, better date display, tabs work in extended search (includes the help file - callwin.hlp)
callwin.hlp help file for callwin.exe (new 11/25/02)
tools.zip callsrch, callwin, autoupdate, callwin help (new 12/12/05)

Updating your database
New 12/12/05 Try the new autoupdate.zip program which will grab the updates you need and install them -- all with one click of the mouse.
But... if you like the old way, here are the update files, and the instructions are below them.
The Help File has more information on updating.
If you would like to receive a weekly update file via email, email me.
The latest database is 5/11/2008. The newest update file will be on the top row, right side.
May 2008 0427to0504.db 0504to0511.db
April 2008 0330to0406.db 0406to0413.db 0413to0420.db 0420to0427.db
March 2008 0224to0302.db 0302to0309.db 0309to0316.db 0316to0323.db 0323to0330.db
February 2008 0127to0203.db 0203to0210.db 0210to0217.db 0217to0224.db
January 2008 1230to0106.db 0106to0113.db 0113to0120.db 0120to0127.db
December 2007 1125to1202.db 1202to1209.db 1209to1216.db 1216to1223.db 1223to1230.db

    To update your database:
  • I strongly recommend the new autoupdate program autoupdate.zip.
But if that doesn't work for you, do the following:
  • Run callwin and note the database date, eg 20051002. The format is yyyymmdd.
Note: The newer version of callwin shows the date as mm/dd/yyyy.
  • The update files are named for the dates they update
  • Eg, MMDDtoMMDD.db
  • Each update file updates one week
  • Begin with the update file that begins with the MMDD (month-day) of your database
  • Download all the files from the first one to the most recent.
  • Put them in the same folder as your call.db file
  • Run dbupdate.exe. It will do one week's update each time.
  • Keep running dbupdate until your database is up to date.
  • dbupdate.exe is available in the tools.zip download
  • But autoupdate will do all this for you.
