SCOTTY HEATER - PROPANE TANK(s)

From Mark Judd:  "OK, I need to put my two cents in here. As soon as someone comes up with a Rule on a Scottys there is always someone to disprove it. :-) My Scotty came with a heater but only ONE LP Tank.   Maybe you need both a Heater AND a gas fridge for the camper to get dual LP tanks.  OR like the heaters them selves, the duel LP tanks were an option."

From Ken - ADK59:  "The 66 Flylander has 2 LP tanks with a heater and just an ice box."

From Rose Wurm:  "My 66 Tonga has propane lamp, propane heater and propane stove and only one LP tank. The lamp and heater lines connect and go to the front of the camper and join the stove line at a "T" and then line goes to LP tank.   I would think that if the fridge was propane I would probably have had a second LP tank.  Of course, if a Scotty came with one tank a previous owner may have modified it to carry two!   What a conundrum! "

From Melinda:   "my first scotty had 2 tanks, a heater under the fridge, and an oven....it was circa 74...my 68 hilander has the heater in the cabinet under the sink, and also has a fridge and an oven and 2 tanks"

80's  SCOTTYS HEATERS - PROPANE TANK(s)

From Bob and Robin:  "But I'm really enjoying this heater and propane discussion. Given the temps here it's pretty appropo! Robin and I continue to spend many evenings sitting in our Scotty in the driveway. In fact, since we got it in November, she and I are working on our 4th 20lb bottle, that's over 60lbs of propane and we haven't left the driveway yet LOL Our furnace keeps it warm even in 1 degree weather. I assume we'll have a similarly spirited conversation on swamp coolers and air conditioners come June! Many of you have commented on the more vintage Scotty's and it's been fun seeing you try to come up with "rules" regarding heaters and propane bottles, but like Mark said earlier, come up with a rule about Scotty's and someone will disprove it…that's part of the fun and lore of these campers I think….I'll comment on the newer Scotty's from the 80's like mine. I pulled out a brochure from 83/84 and here's what Serro advertised. Furnaces were optional on the 12.5,13LP and the 16 footers but standard on 13.5,16.5 and above. 1 20 lb bottle was standard on the 12.5 up to and including the 16.5 model. 2-20lb bottles were optional on these models. On the 18' through 28' models (8 of them) 2-20lb bottles were standard with 2-30 lb bottles optional. On the 4 models above 28', 2-30 lb bottles were standard. So much for trying to connect appliances with how many bottles…at least in the 80's. Based on a 1987 brochure, a furnace was now standard on all but the 13LP. 1 bottle of 20lb propane was standard on everything under 19.5' where 2 became standard, but 2 were optional on even the smaller models."

SCOTTY PROPANE TANK(s)

Bobpsych wrote:  "In a 1968 brochure I see the following for both the 13 Tonga and 13 Gaucho: "Optional Equipment....Both Models...single bottle, rack, regulator...double gas bottle assembly..."This is the earliest reference I have to 2 bottles being an option as sold. The Scotty 15 had the exact same options regarding gas bottles. It doesn't specifically mention the Hi Lander options so perhaps they were the same as the "regular" 15 footer???

I found a 1960 brochure for the Scotty Sportsman 15 and the Scotty with a Potty 15. They both list as options a gas bottle/rack/regulator. Could this be the earliest they offered any gas bottles as sold?"

Propane Leak Teaster from Jeannie

A propane leak tester is available for about $75. You can probably get one from an RV dealer.

The regulation states that you connect it to a burner jet on the stove, open and then close the propane cylinder valve and bleed down the gas pressure with another burner till the unit reads 8 inches of water on the gauge.  It must be able to hold that pressure with the gas supply off for 3 minutes.

     OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

The Serro Scotty 15' is 1300 lbs, 6' 10" outside height, shows 6 windows rather than 4.  The general and optional equipment are pretty much the same as the 13'.  A 3 burner stove and oven is optional, it shows both the pressurized and hand pump model water tanks(same size 10 gal)...both were available in the 'bright finished aluminum'.

It doesn't say anything about 2 gas tanks for either model or size, just says gas bottle, rack and regulator were optional.  Of course maybe it is just not listed as that in the brochure?

From Michael Coumas:  "I have a 1973 Trunk-back ad that shows it comes standard with 2 tanks. I also have a 1969 ad showing 2 Serro Scotty's ( $1,350 for the Hi-lander ) and ($975 for the 13 foot Gaucho ) and both show 2 tanks.  The '64 ad showing the 2 Scotty's only have 1 tank. ( $1165 for the Hi-Lander with the roof windows in the front and $795 for the 13 foot Gaucho )."

From Melinda:  " I have been collecting pics from the internet, and I have 1 tank -, 61Gaucho, 62 gaucho, 66 gaucho,67 Hilander,68 gaucho, 68 HL, 70 gaucho 2 tanks - 59, 66 tonga, 67 hl, 68 hl, 71 hl, and my old 74?  I believe this is an option but seems like it could be either/or on any given model or year....tho some models I don't know, and no info on furnace except my 2 and 1 other one."

From Janice:  " NEW RULE:  My '62 13' had a gas refrig., a heater under the doorstep, and a single LP tank.  So what's that tell 'ya? "

From Jeannie:  "I forget, we all got going on all kinds of  tangents about one or two tanks, were they optional, included when a heater and fridge, etc. But------I am looking at a brochure that is from the late 60's----------------And, specifications for Hi-Lander and Regular 15 (interesting wording on that last one)-----under optional for Scotty 15 models were, electric brakes, tow car kit, rear bumper, canvas bunk, 10 gallon ss water tank with pump and outside fill, floor heater with outside vent, gas bottle/rack/regulator/double gas bottle assembly and decorative Scotty fins. And for ''Scotty 13 Tonga and Gaucho Models"-------optional on both, electric brakes, tow car kit, rear bumper, wall heater/vent single bottle, rack regulator, double gas bottle assembly. This is confusing to me-----------on the Tonga models there would be room I think for a wall heater but not on the Gaucho 13'. And the 15' says floor heater. Almost sounds like they should be reversed. This is from the ad on the group yahoo site."
